About Mateo
My name's Mateo. I'm a UCLA graduate and musician who has been teaching private lessons to students of all ages and all skill levels for the last eight years. I've been playing for 20 years now. I've completed all 11 years of the California MTAC Certificate of Merit piano exam system. I've played dozens of classical recitals and jazz gigs with a big band, in small combos, jam sessions, and solo. Playing music brings me the deepest joy, but there is also something beautiful about explaining an idea to someone and watching their face light up. I combine these two passions—education and music—in my piano lessons.

Hi!
Have you watched musicians playing in a state of bliss and wanted to be able to access that joy? Maybe you learned the foundations of music long ago but have lost touch with that side of yourself? This is where I come in!
I'm comfortable with a wide range of learning styles and goals: classical, jazz, pop, R&B, music theory; structure and discipline, looseness and improvisation; beginners, experienced players, kids, adults.
Theory, technique, interpretation, feeling, cultural context, history—these are all essential to being a musician and therefore essential to my lesson plans, to some degree. But I'm flexible: I tailor lessons to what you tell me you're interested in learning and the amount of commitment you want to put in. The point is that you hone a skill that you enjoy.

Mateo is not only extremely knowledgeable and well-versed in music of any kind and any form, he has an amazing approach to his students. He can teach everyone! He is patient, but not lax - he does keep people on track. And by people I mean teenagers, moms, and older dads :) As a result, his students make progress and love music even more.
Mateo can accommodate any request and work on technique, rhythm, interpretation, etc. He is also fun to work with.Matteo helped me build a roadmap and learn to play piano, listening skills, and music theory! We have had lessons for over a year and I highly recommend him!
