About Malamatenia

Γεια σας! My name is Malamatenia and I am a native Greek speaker. I teach Greek to kids and adults. I am a qualified teacher (QTS) with a BA in History and Archaeology from the University of Thessaloniki in Greece and have also completed several training seminars and courses. I have recently completed a 9-month specialisation course on working Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Autism from the University of the Aegean and a seminar on teaching Greek as a second language from the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute. I have worked as a volunteer in primary schools in the past, supporting children with learning difficulties. I have been working for more than 6 years as a teacher in Greek schools teaching the Greek language at all levels up to (and including GCSE).

About the lesson

For me the relationship with the students is very important and a happy relationship between a teacher and a student is key to a successful learning journey with excellent outcomes. The teaching plan and learning material are always personalised and are created according to the needs of each lesson and the student’s strengths. I use textbooks that are suitable for each student as the basis of the material, which is enriched with my own resources that are specifically adjusted for the learning objectives of each lesson. After every lesson the relevant vocabulary is provided in written form and therefore the students do not need to spend any time taking notes during the lesson. Exercises on grammar and syntax are also provided, which are always adjusted to the needs of the lesson and the student. Extra exercises are also assigned when needed, in the format of quizzes/games using online platforms. Where appropriate I also provide additional material in audio or video format. Depending on the level, I provide pictures that we use in the lessons to discuss topics and practise the speaking skills. Texts for translation from Greek to English and vice versa are used. Special focus is put on writing skills, working on essay writing methodology and sentence and paragraph starting patterns. I use texts for reading comprehension appropriate for each student; starting with simple and pleasant stories for introductory levels and then increasing the level for more advanced lessons and exam preparation. In most lessons I include listening and speaking exercises, discussions and analysis of texts or news articles. Homework is assigned after every lesson with a combination of the above and focusing on the student’s strengths and needs.
