About Nickolas

As an intrigued songwriter at heart, I strive to blend creativity and growing knowledge to form absolute freedom and joy. I believe everyone has a unique voice that can paint with an entire palette of sounds, and whether that voice needs unlocking or additional strengths, strategic learning is key to those personal goals. I wish to benefit the goals of my students in the most effective way possible. My musical endeavors began when I was nine years old, starting with the alto and tenor saxophones in my school band. From there, I quickly began learning guitar and singing. Due to transferable knowledge, I was able to pick up the piano, drums, and bass, which all together allowed me to join and perform with numerous bands. I've written many songs as well, some including three-part harmonies and meticulous arrangements. My experiences with teaching are somewhat limited, but from carefully advancing my own skills, I've learned what it requires to be a truly effective and understanding teacher.

I've always been keen on teaching my curious friends, and I began a full relationship with a few. This extended a bit through word of mouth, and I would teach family friends or cousins of my own friends.

I've taken guitar lessons for 10 years, saxophone lessons for 4, and vocal lessons for 2.5. Furthermore, I've read countless books regarding music theory as a whole, permitting myself to explore other areas of music, mainly jazz.

I believe it's an important first step to understand where the student is currently, and where it is they wish to go. I try to assess their goals and develop the best pathway to help them get there. This may include theoretical building blocks (general musical concepts) or more technical development on the instrument itself to permit more flexibility. However, I prefer to give the student additional options too, as there may be things they would enjoy learning about but have not heard of. Exploration of all kinds!

I've worked with students as young as 8 and as old as 45. Their general skill level has most often been beginner and or average. However, I have spent hours teaching my band mates about theoretical concepts and unique approaches, allowing us to all grow. This has ranged from the "family" of I IV V7 chords to explaining tri-tone substitutions. Of course, there is a starting point for everyone, and I do not believe in "information overload."

Based off my experiences as a student, I would advise that you formulate goals for yourself and ensure the teacher is understanding of that. I've wasted a year or two being taught things in an incorrect manner that really had no benefit. Even if you want to start and play simply, make sure the teacher can accomplish that effectively.

I've recently been gifted a trumpet! I've never played one before, but I always love applying musical knowledge to different instruments. Furthermore, I've progressed my jazz piano playing more, and it's always fun to swing along together. Still love some hard rock too!
