If you never had piano lessons, then I will outline the fundamental information that is imperative for you to begin learning the language of music. If you can remember how you learned to read words, then the process of learning music is similar in sequence.
1. The Musical Alphabet - there are only seven letters: A through G.
2. Learning The Names of the Keys on the Piano - it’s a simple pattern that repeats the sequence of the Musical Alphabet: ABCDEFGABCDEFGABCDEFG, and so on.
3. Learning to Read Notes on the Treble Clef (the Right hand melody). There are five lines and four spaces. The first line is E, then G,BD, and F. The first space is F, then A,C, and E. (Every Good Boy Does Fine). The Spaces coincidentally spell the word FACE.
4. Building Chords - each of the seven letters can be made into their own chords: C= CEG, Cmin= CEbG
Symbols - #= sharps, b= flats, min or m= minor chord, and chord symbols: G7, Fm, Ebmaj7, etc. There are a bunch more symbols and chord symbols to memorize, but it is not a seemingly infinite amount.
Once you are able to identify some of the notes on the Treble or Right Hand Clef, then find the corresponding piano key(s), and memorize a few chords, you will receive an appropriate song (sheet music) to practice and learn. Practicing songs or reading sheet music will reinforce your memory to recall chords, symbols, identify the names of the notes and the corresponding key on your piano. This practice is called READING MUSIC!
There are advantages to learning the piano as an adult compared to learning the piano as a child. Adults tend to learn complicated tasks faster, compared to a child’s slower capacity to learn and memorize information, and then apply it (perform it), on a musical instrument. Also, adults would rather play their favorite songs they have enjoyed listening to throughout their lives. I will give you the sheet music of your favorite songs (and perhaps some classical music titles also ), to learn, and I will teach you how to play them. I have hundreds of popular songs to choose from, and if I don’t have it on my computer to share with you, I can certainly find it for you at no extra charge. Online piano lessons are at your disposal.
