About Neil
As a Berklee and William Paterson University alum (B.A. in Music), I have 30 years of experience teaching guitar, music theory, and optional ear training both worldwide online (with great student success) and in Los Angeles, New Jersey, Arizona, and New York, as well as from the road as a touring musician -- and my work as a recording artist, touring musician, and session guitarist has spanned the same number of years with my work as a solo recording artist being heard on radio stations in over 15 countries to date, and featured on TV and in film in over 35 countries, including for ESPN, MTV, National Geographic, Audi of America, AMC TV, and many more. This includes 2 solo albums under my name and a third one currently in production. My parallel work as a sideman guitarist, songwriter, and arranger over the years includes reaching a top-10 slot on Billboard's music charts as well as collaborations and performances with world-renown musicians including Nuno Bettencourt (of Rihanna / the band Extreme), Stu Hamm (of Joe Satriani / Steve Vai), Aaron Kamin (of the band The Calling), Demian Arriaga (of Miley Cyrus / Orianthi / Jonas Brothers), Lilian Garcia (of WWE), and Gabriela Rae (of Trans-Siberian Orchestra), among others.
I've had the honor of being voted as a top-10 international guitar finalist by guitar legend Steve Vai in 2001 in the Tonos.com Steve Vai Guitar Challenge sponsored by Ibanez guitars. I am also currently an officially endorsed artist of Spectraflex instrument cables and have worked with other companies like Taylor guitars and D'Addario strings.
*(My former students include people of all ages and abilities, but also notably multi-Grammy-winning / multi-platinum / top Billboard-charting recording artists and producers, including Phoebe Bridgers, among others, as well as Hollywood screen actors, including Zoey Deutch, among others.)

With 30 years of professional teaching and performance / recording experience, I teach lessons both worldwide online (with great student success) via Google Meet and in-person to a wide range of students at my professional recording studio in Woodland Park, NJ, and I teach all ages (as young as age 6 in-person or age 12 for online up through ages above 70), as well as all levels from beginner to advanced, and many styles including rock, blues, pop, folk, jazz, fusion, prog rock, and much more.
My lessons are structured to fit the needs of the student, and follow a customized version of my own time-proven curriculum that I've developed over 30 years, which include a balance of technique, songs / repertoire, and varying levels of music theory and music reading that serve the needs of the student. Optionally, I also teach ear training to my more advanced guitar students.
*I spend extra time outside of the lessons before and after each lesson, keeping organized notes on the progress of every one of my students with a clear agenda of the subjects to be covered in each lesson so that you get the most out of your time working with me. For online lessons, you will receive easy-to-read PDF files and related files for all of the lesson topics, which I explain, expand on, and review in the lessons. For in-person lessons at my studio, you will receive physical printouts of these same documents.
I look forward to hearing from you!

Review

Perfect! Neil is eminently a musician and teacher. His knowledge of and passion for music shine through in every lesson; he is a master musician with encyclopedic knowledge of theory and of different genres. But the most important reason why you should select him as a teacher is his ability to impart that knowledge to you as a student. He is exceptionally organized, with a clear lesson plan for every lesson. This was particularly important to me, because my previous teacher (from a chain store that rhymes with "Shmitar Shmenter"), while a nice guy, would welcome me to my lesson with "what do you want to learn today?" This increased my anxiety over learning, as I felt that I was being held responsible for knowing what I didn't know, and made me feel like an idiot. Neil, on the other hand, knows how and what to teach.
With Neil, I come into a lesson knowing I'm going to be working and learning the entire hour (and sometimes more than an hour, as Neil is not a clock watcher). Aside from knowing exactly what he's going to be teaching me that day, he will have printouts ready for me to put into the lesson binder he's helped me develop. And whatever it is we're working on, he will do it patiently and without making me feel like an idiot. As an older student, I get embarrassed easily, but Neil does not even jokingly make fun of anything I do; instead, he encourages me, congratulates me on good work, and lets me know that everyone makes the same mistakes I do, and doesn't let me dwell on them. It may be strange to discuss the psychological benefit of a good teacher, but I think it's important. Essentially, Neil's encouraging and positive attitude makes me want to continue playing and practicing, and to not give up.
I'm a very busy guy, with a career and other major priorities. Learning guitar is something I really want to fit into my life, especially as I get older and want to keep my brain engaged. I hope to eventually join a cover band and play the occasional gig, and Neil knows this and is building me to that, on my time and schedule. I couldn't be happier with my progress, and with Neil as my teacher. I highly recommend him to anyone at any level looking to learn guitar.- Adino is a musically-inclined and passionate guitar student, and I look forward to continuing to work with him and helping him further understand the fretboard and music theory, as well as develop his playing in multiple styles.Neil's response :

Neil has been my 9-year-old son’s guitar teacher for nearly three years, and I can say with full confidence that he is a trustworthy, skilled, and child-friendly instructor. He teaches not only how to play the guitar but also emphasizes reading music and building a solid foundation in technique, rhythm, and chords.
Neil has a gift for breaking down complex concepts into age-appropriate lessons and takes a progressive approach that has grown with my son’s abilities. His teaching style is patient, creative, and flexible—he adapts each session to meet my child’s needs in the moment, while keeping it fun and engaging.
He brings enthusiasm and encouragement to every lesson, uses gentle discipline to keep things focused, and communicates clearly with me about my son’s progress and what to practice. He’s consistent and reliable, but also flexible when needed, making the entire experience both productive and low-stress.
Neil has been a wonderful influence on my son’s musical journey, and I highly recommend him.I’ve been learning guitar from Neil for almost a year now, an incredibly versatile and passionate teacher. Whether it’s rock, blues, funk, acoustic, or even flamenco, Neil moves effortlessly between genres and brings that same range into his teaching. Every lesson isn’t just about playing better—it’s about connecting more deeply with music itself.
Neil’s love for music shines through in every session. He’s patient, detail-oriented, and incredibly generous with his wealth of tabs and materials. His well-rounded approach has helped me grow in all aspects of guitar playing—from soloing to rhythm, and especially in applying music theory in practical, creative ways.
Since starting lessons with Neil, not only has my playing improved, but my appreciation for the instrument and for music as a whole has grown tremendously. I can’t recommend him highly enough.
Neil has been giving my daughter guitar lessons for over 3 years now and she has grown and learned so much. He is patient and flexible with our crazy schedules. I highly recommend him.
I can’t recommend Neil enough. Neil goes above and beyond just guitar lessons and teaches you the importance of musicality and technique. He brings things out in you as a musician that you weren’t aware of.
