About Kym
I have been a tutor for over 2.5 years, focusing mainly on Chemistry, Maths, Biology, Physics, and of course Law. My students have ranged from young children all the way up to GCSEs, A levels and undergraduate degree, and I have been incredibly fortunate to have helped my students improve their grades by an average of a two grade increase. I also have experience helping students complete their 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance exams, applying and getting into some of the top schools across the country. The way I choose to structure my sessions depends on the student, their needs, and the best way of learning for them, but I always begin the first sessions discussing in depth the various topics that they have studied and how confident/competent they feel in these topics. This ensures that I have a clear outline of the topics upon which we should focus and prioritise our time accordingly - something that is particularly relevant as we approach exam time. In general, however, I try to structure each session by picking one topic and asking the student to explain to me what they understand about the topic. I then identify and/or clarify areas that I have noticed may be lacking or incorrect, and explain these concepts to the student. Finally, I pick out practice questions (either example questions or exam-style questions depending on how confident the student feels) and go through these with them, making sure they understand both how to answer the question but also how to identify the key factors in an exam question. Exam technique is something that I feel many students lack, and by structuring my sessions in this way I hope to address this issue. In order to measure a student's progress, I write a mini summary explaining what we did in that lesson, what we achieved and whether any further sessions were needed on that. I send these to both the student and parents at whatever frequency we have agreed, though usually after every 8 sessions.
