About Simphiwe

My name is Simphiwe, and I am passionate about Economics and helping students develop a deeper understanding of how the world works.

For me, Economics is more than just a school subject. It is a way of understanding people's choices, the challenges facing our communities, how businesses operate, and how governments make decisions that affect our daily lives. I believe that when students understand Economics, they gain valuable knowledge that extends far beyond the classroom.

My interest in teaching comes from the opportunity to make a difference in how students learn and understand the subject. I want to help learners move away from the idea that Economics is simply about memorising definitions and preparing for examinations. Instead, I want them to develop the ability to think critically, analyse economic problems, and connect what they learn in class to real-life situations.

My teaching approach focuses on simplifying complex concepts, using relatable examples, and guiding students step by step until they understand the reasoning behind each topic. I believe that every student deserves an opportunity to learn in an environment where asking questions is encouraged and making mistakes is part of the learning process.

My goal is to help students build confidence in their abilities, improve their academic performance, and discover that Economics can be both interesting and practical.

How I Teach Economics: Making Economics Understandable, Practical, and Relevant

My approach to teaching Economics is built on one fundamental belief: Economics should not simply be memorised; it should be understood.

I teach Economics by connecting classroom concepts to real-life experiences, helping learners understand how the economy works and how it affects their everyday lives. From inflation and unemployment to supply and demand, government policies, and economic growth, I use practical examples to make even the most challenging concepts easier to understand.

What makes my teaching unique is that I teach learners to think like economists, not just answer like students.

Rather than relying entirely on textbook definitions, I encourage learners to ask questions, analyse economic situations, understand cause-and-effect relationships, and develop their own reasoning. For example, when explaining inflation, I do not stop at defining it. I explore how rising prices affect household budgets, why the purchasing power of money declines, and how the government and the South African Reserve Bank may respond.

I also focus on helping learners understand the logic behind examination questions. I break down difficult topics into manageable sections, explain the key principles, and demonstrate how to apply economic knowledge when answering multiple-choice, short-answer, and essay questions.

My teaching emphasises three important areas:

Understanding before memorisation: Learners understand the meaning of economic concepts before attempting to memorise definitions.

Real-life application I connect Economics to everyday experiences, current economic challenges, and the South African economy.
Examination confidence: I help learners develop the ability to interpret questions, construct logical arguments, apply economic terminology, and present well-structured answers.

Ultimately, my goal is not merely to help learners pass Economics. It is to help them develop economic awareness, critical-thinking skills, and the confidence to understand the financial and economic decisions that shape their world.

I make Economics relatable, understandable, and practical—because when learners understand how the economy works, they can do more than pass an examination; they can understand the world around them.
