Ever since I came across the saying of Winston Churchill “It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed” contributing my best while taking up any task has been one of my prime goals. I had experienced through my early childhood of the ignorance prevalent in my community and the world around me and it has surely encouraged me to enter into the world of knowledge and academics so that I can contribute something to alleviate the ignorance. My interest turned towards Islamic Studies soon after my senior secondary schooling. I believed that my simple goal of gifting the society I dealt with, with a beneficial return after my studies encouraged me to take up the subject of Islamic Studies. During my studies I found that a lion’s share of the Muslim society didn’t have the true or clear knowledge of Islam. Their beliefs and ideas were based on illusions and superstitions. So there I was – a sea of knowledge, where I was only beginning to step into the shore. My interests especially focused on how to impart the Islamic knowledge in a simple manner to the common man. The subjects I had to cover include Quranic commentary, Hadith (sayings of the Prophet), Fiqh (Jurisprudence), Islamic History etc. I had also done masters in Islamic Studies in which my favourite topic was ‘Islam and Pluralism’. My teacher Prof. Ishtiyaque Danish provided me and my colleagues with the necessary guidance in pursuing higher studies in the concerned subject.
Islamic Studies today has grown to an extent that it has good possibilities of a good career around the globe. New researches are yet still to be completed and the effective resource persons are very less. I believe that I can do an effective contribution to this field of knowledge. My knowledge of Arabic language is an added advantage as most of the basic Islamic texts are in Arabic. Without a doubt given the political turmoil worldwide and the ever- present fears of extremism and terrorism, promoting intelligent debate and understanding of Islam and the role of Muslims in the contemporary world is increasingly vital. It's a crucial 21st century issue and there is a growing recognition that Islamic Studies has become a subject of strategic importance in a multicultural society. The students of today, if properly taught, will become the teachers of the future with a vision for multiculturalism and peaceful co- existence.
