About Swarnayan

I’m Swarnayan, an experienced Bansuri flutist and passionate teacher with over 20 years of rigorous training in Indian classical music. My musical journey began with Indian classical vocal training from the Bishnupur Gharana, which deeply shapes my approach to the flute. Under the tutelage of disciples of Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia from the Maihar Gharana, I have developed a strong foundation in the expressive Gayaki Ang style. My teaching philosophy combines years of vocal knowledge and flute expertise to help students understand the instrument holistically. I love to explore the emotional depth of ragas and the philosophy behind music, making lessons interactive and inspiring. Whether you are a complete beginner or an advanced player, my goal is to nurture your skills, confidence, and passion for the Bansuri in a supportive, personalized environment. I look forward to sharing the joy of music and guiding you on this beautiful artistic journey.

My teaching approach deeply integrates the fundamentals of Hindustani classical music, with a strong emphasis on vocal training to enrich Bansuri playing. Years of vocal study help unlock the nuances of the flute, making the learning process more intuitive and connected. Classes are interactive and encourage philosophical reflection on music, exploring the emotional landscapes and stories behind each raga and song. This holistic method not only builds technical skills but also nurtures a heartfelt connection to the music, making every lesson a meaningful and inspiring experience for students of all levels.

  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

My primary teaching focus is music—Hindustani classical vocal, bansuri (Indian bamboo flute), and guitar. Music has been a serious and consistent part of my life since my school years. Through disciplined practice and continuous learning, I developed a deep respect for the structure, listening skills, and control required in both classical and contemporary music. I particularly enjoy helping students build strong foundations, sound awareness, and confidence, rather than rushing toward surface-level performance.

Alongside music, I teach Biology. I hold a B.Sc. in Life Sciences from Presidency University and an M.Sc. in Biochemistry from the Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University, and I am currently pursuing doctoral research in a neurobiology-related area. My scientific training allows me to teach music with exceptional clarity—especially in areas such as breathing control, posture, sound production, practice efficiency, and avoiding physical or vocal strain. This helps students progress systematically rather than through trial and error.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

My motivation to teach comes from long-term exposure to both artistic and academic learning environments. I have seen how the right guidance can transform confusion into confidence. Teaching allows me to structure learning in a way that removes fear—whether a student feels intimidated by classical music or by complex biological concepts. I find it deeply fulfilling to help students develop consistency, control, and independent thinking.
  • How does your work help society?

Through music teaching, I combine artistic sensitivity with scientific understanding of breathing, muscle coordination, and learning patterns. This helps students practice more efficiently, avoid bad habits, and build sustainable technique, which often has a positive impact on focus and mental well-being. Through biology teaching, I support students in developing conceptual clarity, analytical thinking, and exam confidence essential for higher studies and research-oriented careers.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

I am inspired by musicians and teachers who emphasized depth, fundamentals, and long-term development over shortcuts. Their approach—patient, disciplined, and honest—continues to guide my own teaching philosophy.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

Outside teaching, I spend time in focused riyaaz, listening analytically to music, reading, and learning about sound, acoustics, and recording techniques. I also enjoy quiet, grounding activities that help maintain balance and concentration, which reflect directly in my teaching style.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

A recurring experience in my teaching has been working with students who initially believe classical music or biology is “too difficult” for them. By restructuring their approach and focusing on fundamentals, I have seen students move from hesitation and irregular practice to consistency and confidence. Observing this shift—from self-doubt to control—is the most rewarding part of my professional journey.
