I have both an undergraduate degree and master’s degree in English literature. Finishing my master’s with a 4.0, I feel well equipped to help you with any needs related to reading comprehension as well as composition skills across multiple genres. I have taught English in a wide variety of settings: middle school, high school, community English programs, as well as at Colorado State University at the college level. As both an instructor and learner myself, I feel committed to the pursuit of understanding how language has shaped the world that we live. Additionally, I believe in accessing the potentialities of language to create a better, more just world. I not only believe in the power of studying language as my own life’s passion, but I teach composition as a collaborative expression of these ideals.
The primary tenet for my philosophy as a teacher is creating a community of learners and interrogating the traditional power dynamics between “instructor” and “student.” Overall, I challenge the narrative of instructor as the arbiter of knowledge, and students as simply receivers of said knowledge. These frameworks ground my belief that it is the job of instructors to facilitate discourse and dialogue around issues and, additionally, leverage the skills and assets that students bring to the classroom to facilitate growth and learning. I believe in tutoring where students see themselves as participants within a community of learners and writers. As I am committed to creating writing that not only makes sense of the world around us, but that language has the capacity to shape, liberate, and is an active force within the world.
My primary approach as a tutor is understanding that writing is an active and generative process, and therefore I dedicate most of my attention to the students’ revision process, both individually and collaboratively. With this, I stress the significance of the “shitty first drafts” as a necessary component of the writing process. The messiness of your first draft is a strength, not a sign of failure; this is what gives students the freedom to develop and hone their skills. Writing is generative, active, messy—and growth, within the classroom, does not come solely from me as instructor but, rather, their own dedication to the messiness of the process.
