About McGinnis
I help college students build careers in finance—including investment banking, private equity, and asset management—from figuring out which path fits them to landing a competitive offer and succeeding once they get there.
I grew up in a small town where I had little exposure to careers in finance, so I understand what it is like to enter the industry without an established network or a clear roadmap. I eventually graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University with a degree in Finance and navigated the finance recruiting process firsthand.
During college, I interned in investment banking at Houlihan Lokey, where I earned a full-time return offer after my summer internship. I also gained experience in credit risk at RBC Capital Markets and at boutique investment bank Taylor Advisory.
Rather than returning to banking, I chose to build my career around coaching and developing students at Scholars of Finance, a national nonprofit that develops undergraduate students into principled leaders in finance. I directly coach dozens of students and student leaders, lead recruiting, leadership, and professional-development sessions for hundreds of students, and help oversee thousands of students across the organization. I have worked with chapters at universities including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, MIT, NYU, and many more.
Students I have directly coached have gone on to earn offers or begin full-time roles at firms including Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Guggenheim, and Bank of America.
I believe career success starts before recruiting. Students often pursue paths because they feel pressure to follow them or simply do not know what other options exist. My goal is to help you first understand your values, strengths, interests, and what you want from your career; then identify a path in finance that fits; and finally build the strategy and professional skills to succeed.
The goal is not simply to land an offer. It is to land an offer for a career you are excited to pursue—and be prepared to succeed once you get there.

I offer individualized career and recruiting coaching for college students pursuing careers in finance, including investment banking, private equity, asset management, and related fields.
Sessions are built around the most important problem you are currently trying to solve. Depending on where you are in the process, we can work on:
• Recruiting strategy: Build a focused plan around target roles and firms, recruiting timelines, applications, networking, and the actions most likely to improve your chances of landing an offer.
• Resume & LinkedIn: Strengthen your bullets, improve how you communicate your experience, and develop a clear, credible story that helps recruiters quickly understand your background and potential.
• Behavioral & fit interviews: Refine your personal story, practice common questions, conduct mock interviews, and receive direct feedback on the content, structure, clarity, and delivery of your answers. I do not provide technical interview preparation.
• Networking: Develop an outreach strategy, improve cold emails and LinkedIn messages, prepare for informational calls, and learn how to build genuine professional relationships throughout the recruiting process.
• Career direction: Clarify your values, strengths, interests, and goals; explore different areas of finance; and determine which paths best fit the career and life you want to build.
• Internship & return-offer preparation: Prepare to succeed once you arrive at a firm by understanding professional expectations, communicating effectively, building strong working relationships, seeking and responding to feedback, and positioning yourself to earn a return offer.
• Professional development: Build the communication, leadership, judgment, organization, and relationship-management skills that will help you perform effectively in internships and full-time roles and continue progressing in finance.
• Career decisions: Evaluate competing offers, different areas of finance, and other important early-career decisions based on both the opportunity itself and what you want from your career.
A typical session begins with the most important decision, obstacle, or deliverable in front of you. We work directly on it and finish with specific next steps.
Whether you are just beginning to explore finance or already preparing for interviews, the objective is the same: identify the right path, become a stronger candidate, land the offer, and be prepared to succeed once you get there.

I’ve known McGinnis for two years at Georgetown, and I couldn’t recommend him enough for career guidance. As a freshman hoping to break into corporate finance, I didn’t know where to begin, but he helped me structure my approach step by step, from organizing my outreach and building technical skills to understanding firm culture and learning how to tell my story. His advice was always practical and sincere. I still remember when he told me to approach interviews by asking why each opportunity mattered to me, which completely changed how I thought about recruiting. After speaking with many professionals and upperclassmen, I realized his advice helped me stand out by making my story more personal and grounded. I’m grateful for everything he’s done, and I know others will benefit just as much.
I met McGinnis early in my time at Georgetown, and he quickly became someone I trusted for honest, thoughtful guidance. One of our first real conversations was about what I wanted out of college, and from that point on, he helped me think through my personal, social, and professional goals in a way that felt specific and meaningful. What stood out most wasn’t just his experience, like transferring schools, leading organizations, or studying abroad, but how seriously he listened and how much he genuinely cared. He never just gives answers; he helps you ask the right questions and figure things out for yourself. He strikes a rare balance—someone who is experienced and professional, but also approachable and genuinely invested in your growth. I recommend him to anyone looking for perspective, clarity, and guidance they can trust.
McGinnis took a focused, individualized, and impactful approach to supporting me through a late-career job transition. With decades of experience behind me, I felt unsure of how to pivot into a new role that aligned with how I wanted to finish my career.
He helped me identify the traits that had made me successful over the years and showed me how to clearly communicate those strengths in a way that resonated with employers in a completely different industry. Talking about yourself is never easy, especially later in life, but McGinnis made it comfortable and effective.
I’m now three months into what I consider my twilight career, and I couldn’t be more pleased. I highly recommend working with McGinnis, whether you’re just starting out or making a major change like I did.McGinnis helped me apply to graduate programs in the U.S., and the experience was truly eye-opening. He helped me reflect on my motivations, identify meaningful experiences, and express myself with confidence, all while making the process much more enjoyable and less stressful.
He listens carefully and helps you turn your personal story into something unique and powerful. I not only got into the top schools I wanted (i.e., Duke, Boston University, and Northeastern), but I also developed skills I’ll use for future job applications and interviews.
If you want to stand out in a competitive admissions process and show why schools should choose you, McGinnis is the person to guide you.View more recommendations
