About Yuan
Inspiring Confidence and Establishing Professionalism: Kia ora, I’m Yuan Shen, a Master of Teaching (Secondary) student at the University of Waikato, specializing in science subjects like Chemistry and Biology. With a Bachelor's degree in Brewing Engineering from Jiangnan University and years of tutoring experience, I bring a strong academic foundation and a tailored approach to each lesson. I’ve worked with students of various backgrounds, both in China and New Zealand, and I am fluent in Mandarin and English. I offer flexible tutoring options, both in Hamilton and online, ensuring students feel confident and supported in their learning journey. My Approach to Tutoring and Teaching Methodology:
As a tutor, I believe that every student is unique, and effective teaching requires an adaptable, personalized approach. My teaching methodology is centered around building a strong understanding of core concepts while fostering a positive learning environment. I focus on breaking down complex topics into smaller, more digestible parts, ensuring that students build their confidence and understanding gradually.
I employ active learning techniques, where students are encouraged to actively participate in lessons, solve problems, and discuss their ideas. This helps solidify their understanding and boosts their ability to apply knowledge in real-world scenarios. I also incorporate a variety of resources, including visual aids, practice exercises, and digital tools to enhance the learning experience.
Typical Length of a Lesson:
My typical lessons last for 60 minutes, though I am flexible depending on the student's needs. For students who require more focused sessions, I can extend the lesson to 90 minutes or more. I believe in pacing lessons according to the individual learning speed of the student, ensuring that they grasp the material thoroughly before moving on to more advanced topics.
Qualifications and Experience:
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Brewing Engineering from Jiangnan University in China, where I developed a strong foundation in chemistry, biology, and physics. In addition to my engineering background, I have gained extensive experience in tutoring various science subjects, including chemistry, biology, and physics. My teaching experience includes freelance tutoring, working as a part-time teacher at New Oriental Education Group, and corporate training roles at Meituan, where I designed and delivered training for professionals.
Currently, I am pursuing a Master of Teaching (Secondary) at the University of Waikato, which further strengthens my understanding of the New Zealand education system and best practices for secondary school teaching.
Who the Lessons Are For:
I offer tutoring for secondary school students (Years 9-13), focusing on NCEA Chemistry, Biology, and Science. My lessons are suitable for students of varying skill levels, whether they are preparing for exams or seeking to improve their overall understanding of scientific concepts. I also offer tailored support for international students, especially those from Chinese-speaking backgrounds, as I am fluent in both Mandarin and English.
I provide both in-person tutoring in Hamilton and online tutoring sessions, making it convenient for students to access high-quality lessons no matter their location.
