About Ashley

Hi, I’m Ashley, a Melbourne-based secondary teacher who enjoys helping students build confidence and discover what they are capable of achieving. I am a fully VIT registered teacher in my fifth year of teaching, with experience across Japanese, Humanities and Digital Technologies.

I hold a Bachelor of International Studies, with studies in Japanese and a minor in History, and a Master of Teaching specializing in Humanities and Japanese. Alongside classroom teaching, I am a Japanese Coordinator at the Victorian School of Languages, mentor students and pre-service teachers, and contribute to developing new Humanities and Digital Technologies curricula.

I want to tutor because individual support can make a meaningful difference to how students feel about learning. Sometimes a student needs a concept explained differently, more time to practice, or encouragement to ask the question they were hesitant to raise in class. I enjoy helping students work through those moments and recognize their own progress.

My approach is patient, encouraging and purposeful. I value each student’s background, interests and goals, and aim to create an environment where they feel respected and comfortable asking for help. Mistakes are part of learning, and I support students to use feedback as a practical guide for improvement.

I also lead an AI Action Research Project focused on responsible AI use in education. This reflects my broader interest in helping students develop critical thinking, digital literacy and the skills they need for a changing world.

Whether you are finding a subject challenging or looking to extend yourself, my goal is to help you develop stronger understanding, effective learning habits and greater confidence in your own abilities.

My lessons are designed to help students build confidence, strengthen their understanding and become more independent learners. I offer personalised tutoring for Years 7 to 10 in Japanese, Humanities and Digital Technologies, adapting each session to the student’s goals, current schoolwork and areas needing improvement.

I use clear explanations, worked examples and guided practice before supporting students to apply their learning independently. Lessons include regular checks for understanding and practical feedback so students know what they are doing well and how to improve. I create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.

Depending on the subject, lessons may focus on:

• Japanese: vocabulary, hiragana, katakana, kanji, grammar, reading, writing, listening and conversation.
• Humanities: History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship, and Business and Economics, including source analysis, research and structured responses.
• Digital Technologies: computer hardware, networks, cybersecurity, digital literacy and responsible AI use.
• Study skills: revision strategies, organisation, assessment preparation and interpreting questions.

Lesson length can be agreed upon to suit the student’s needs, with a suggested session length of 60 minutes. Each lesson includes a check-in, focused teaching and practice, followed by a review of progress and next steps.

I am a fully VIT registered secondary teacher in my fifth year of teaching. I hold a Master of Teaching in Humanities and Japanese, alongside a Bachelor of International Studies. My experience includes teaching across Humanities, Japanese and Digital Technologies, coordinating Japanese at the Victorian School of Languages, and contributing to curriculum development.

Whether a student needs help catching up, consolidating their learning or extending their skills, I tailor the level of support and challenge to help them progress.
