About Laura
Writing and close reading are not alchemy; they are learnable skill sets. Witnessing that moment of realization, when a student discovers they can do what once felt impossible, is what I love most about teaching.
Over the last 17 years, I have taught students how to analytically engage with and investigate canonical texts at the level colleges expect of future students. I teach students to move beyond what a text says to examine how and why the writer constructed that meaning, the critical thinking skill that matters most in advanced coursework.
As a writing tutor, I am intentional about how I communicate a student's weaknesses. Improvement requires the vulnerable work of confronting mistakes, and I work hard to make that feel like an opportunity and empowerment. Past students have described my feedback as "tough but clear," and have credited my approach with their rapid improvement and genuine confidence by the end of the year.
My college essay students have gone on to produce work strong enough to earn personal notes from admissions offices. That outcome doesn't happen by accident; it is the result of honest feedback, structured timelines, and keeping the student's authentic voice at the center of our work together.

I bring 17 years of classroom experience teaching grades 10–12 at the college-prep, honors, and AP levels. My approach is grounded in the Gradual Release of Responsibility model (direct instruction, guided practice, and independent application) personalized to each student's goals, with scaffolded tasks and dialogue designed to get them there.
In a writing lesson, that might include analyzing the organization of a sample paragraph before the student drafts their own. For reading analysis, we examine how a literary device creates meaning, then apply that construct as we analyze a passage together.
My lessons are for students in grades 9–12 in on-level or advanced English, including honors and AP English Language & Composition. I work directly with the texts and concepts from students' classes, so tutoring reinforces what's happening in school. I can also design courses for students as well.
As a College Board AP Exam reader for the past five years, my tutoring and feedback focus on what actually matters on exam day. So, for an AP Lang exam prep session, students submit a practice essay before our session, and then I score it using the official AP rubric so we can walk through exactly what earned points, what didn't, and why.
