About Lianne

Having completed a Master’s in Medical Physics at University College London (UCL) , and now working professionally as a physicist, I have extensive experience tutoring GCSE and A-level students, helping them exceed their aspirational grades while developing a deep and lasting understanding of Physics. I offer online lessons, tailoring my approach to each student’s learning style. In addition to running my private tutoring business, I have worked with a secondary school in London, supporting sixth form students in A-level Physics on a weekly basis. DBS certified and confident in online teaching environments, I take pride in my clear communication and ability to explain complex concepts from multiple perspectives. Tutoring has allowed me to grow personally and professionally, enhancing my understanding of Physics while developing the skills to inspire and empower my students.

In my lessons, I focus on explaining the theory in detail while addressing any misconceptions the student may have. Throughout the session, we work together to correct misunderstandings, and I conclude with summary questions to reinforce learning. I believe that achieving excellent grades requires working smart, so I encourage students to revise after each lesson to consolidate their understanding and improve recall. This approach is reinforced with a small, targeted homework task, ensuring that students continuously build on their knowledge and develop confidence in applying concepts independently.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

At school, I used to explain and help my peers with a lot of concepts. Sometimes, they would come to me with their queries rather than asking the teacher. I noticed that I was making a difference in their learning and through word of mouth, they had referred me to their friends and siblings. I realised that I could do well as a private tutor and have been doing so since 2016.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, and the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Since I am a physicist, I have extensive education in physics and mathematics so I mainly tutor in these 2 subjects. However, I am also a musician. I play the piano, flute, and singing in my free time. I offer piano and music theory lessons as well. The topics I like to discuss most are mechanics, particles and radiation physics, and waves; I find them the most fun to teach. In maths, I like calculus and geometry the most. The topics that I enjoy the least are usually determined by the individual student. Sometimes, students are less fond of some topics so they lack the motivation to study these topics. This makes it harder for a tutor to convey the same enthusiasm, but it is also fulfilling when the students' interest grows throughout the course.
  • Did you have any role models; or a teacher that inspired you?

I am very fortunate to have had numerous inspiring science and music teachers in my life. They all contributed to my learning and instilled in me a profound love for the subject. They helped me to connect theoretical principles to practical applications.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, flexibility and dedication. After this, a good tutor needs to have a good grasp of the curriculum and experience of exam techniques; to both motivate and communicate. Just as with good teachers, one must have high organisational skills as you will often have a flexible timetable and a range of needs. However, especially in a one-to-one setting, a good tutor needs to care about the students and their families. This caring translates into having a good rapport and time for people.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

The importance of following all the safety procedures during a science practical, and to keep your safety goggles on at all times!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

When I was learning basic scientific concepts for the first time, I had a hard time applying the knowledge into everyday life. For example, I was told the textbook definition of terms such as 'Force' or 'Refraction' but was never actually told how I can experience and understand these in real life situations. I think this creates a problem where students can not associate closely with what they are learning; which I believe is essential for confidence building and clear understanding.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Although I love academia and teaching, the arts have always been a passion of mine. I especially like making music in my free time or watching a ballet or opera performance.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions?)

A Superprof is to have been there, done that, but to remember what it is like not to have done so and to share in the excitement and enthusiasm of attaining it. I view the relationship between my students and I to be a partnership rather than a rigid approach to learning. That way, I am able to build rapport, empathise with the students and to care, just as much as the parents and students themselves do, about their studies.
