About Hao

Hi, I am Hao.

I am a PhD candidate in Human-Computer Interaction at the Swinburne Living Lab, Swinburne University of Technology. I have a background in software engineering, and I have taught programming and game design at university level. I have published nine peer-reviewed papers at OzCHI, IEEE, ACM and other venues. I teach in English and Mandarin. I hold a current Victorian Working with Children Check.

Education
In my PhD, I design and build interactive exercise technology for older adults, combining software and hardware components. I co-design the technology with a physiotherapist, test it with residents in aged care and analyse the data collected by the technology.
I completed a Master of Philosophy in Computer and Information Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. During this degree, I led research projects in augmented reality and multimodal sensing.
Before my Master of Philosophy, I earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Digital Media Art and a Master of Engineering in Software Engineering at Xiamen University. In these degrees, I learnt programming and interaction design, and I specialised in digital media technology in my master's degree. I was named an Excellent Graduate for both degrees.

Work experience
I work as a support worker for people with disabilities. In this role, I provide one-on-one game development tutoring to an autistic student, and I adapt each session to the student's pace, interests and learning style.
I worked as a researcher on an Australian Research Council Discovery Project at Swinburne, where I co-facilitated 17 co-design workshops with aged care residents.
I worked as a research engineer and team leader in a robotics lab at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, where I focused on software engineering. I built interactive interfaces in Unity that captured people's eye gaze, hand gestures, voice and facial expressions. I also developed software that used this multimodal input to interpret people's intentions and control robots.

Teaching experience
At Monash University, I teach weekly classes in a programming unit. Before my first class, I completed the same kinds of tasks that students complete in this unit, so I understand the tasks from a student's point of view. Each week, students complete programming tasks and submit their code to me for feedback. I give written feedback on each submission. In class, I then discuss the code with each student. When students explain their thinking, we can both see what they have mastered and where more practice will help.
At The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, I worked as a teaching assistant for three semesters. In a Python programming course for 180 undergraduates, I prepared and delivered lectures and lab sessions. I also created and graded the course assessments to monitor students' progress. In a game design course for 35 undergraduates, I delivered tutorials and studio sessions. I designed weekly activities and assignments to guide students from a first concept to a working prototype. I also gave feedback on their design decisions and the reasoning behind them. I received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award for my work in this course.

Together, we work towards your programming goals until you can write code with confidence.

Maybe you are taking a programming unit at university or TAFE. Maybe you are preparing for VCE Software Development or Algorithmics, or learning to code from scratch. We start from where you are and what you need.

Each lesson is 60 minutes. We take one idea at a time. First, we talk through the idea and try it out together in live code. Then we apply the idea to a new problem, with you at the keyboard.

If you study programming at university or TAFE, we work through the concepts in your unit together. We practise structuring, testing and debugging code side by side. For assessed tasks, we unpack the task requirements and practise the required skills on similar problems.

If you enjoy games, we build your own 2D and 3D games together in Unity and C#, and you learn to program along the way. Every game lesson ends with something new that you can play.

For VCE students, we plan our practice around the VCE Software Development and Algorithmics study designs.

We meet online by default. We can also meet in person in Melbourne's inner east, with a parent at home for students under 18.

Lessons are 60 minutes. Online lessons are $60 per hour, and in-person lessons in Melbourne's inner east are $75 per hour, including a $15 travel fee. The first lesson is a free 30-minute session, and we use it to talk about your goals and where you are starting from. Packs of 5 lessons ($285) and 10 lessons ($540) are valid until the end of the school term or university semester in which they are bought. Payment is due before each lesson or when a pack is bought. Please give at least 24 hours' notice to reschedule. Late cancellations and missed lessons are charged in full, with one free late change per school term or university semester. For students under 18, a parent or guardian books and pays, and all messages include the parent or guardian.
