I have known Dita since the time she was a graduate student at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Sofia University. Under the direction of Prof. Nedev she wrote an MS thesis about Moore spaces. The results from the thesis were published and she obtained her first award – Award for Scientific Achievements of University Students. Because of her wonderful MS thesis, Dita was recommended to become a Ph.D. student at Sofia University. Her Ph.D. thesis about cardinal invariants of topological spaces was inspired by the results of the famous topologists A. Arhangel’skii and I. Juhasz After she defended her thesis she was offered a research position at the Institute of Mathematics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Later, she became an Assistant Professor in the Division of Topology, Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Sofia University.

The topic of her research is cardinal invariants in topological spaces and
general type of structures. She has studied cardinality restrictions for such
spaces. I would like to point out that because of her research achievements Dr.
Stavrova received a Senior Research Grant from Fulbright Foundation for the
1994/1995 academic year that she spent at Auburn University Auburn Alabama,
USA. There she was working with Prof. Gary Gruenhage.

Dr. Stavrova was teaching at the Department of Mathematics and Informatics, Sofia University. She distinguishes herself by her serious attitude to teaching. I would say she is a talented, even gifted teacher. She is teaching courses on Calculus for first- and second-year students at the Department of Chemistry and Department of Mathematics and Informatics; courses on Introduction to Set theory and Topology; a graduate course on Cardinal invariants of topological spaces; elective course in Topology of metric spaces. She has recently developed and taught a mandatory course in Computational Topology for second year students in Informatics.

Dita enjoys working with students and supervising their studies. She has continuously been improving her classes, lectures and approaches to teaching and lecturing to find better ways for communication of deep mathematical ideas to a broad auditorium.

During 1999-2004 she was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Miami University,
Oxford, Ohio, where she taught Calculus and Topology.

As a personality she is balanced, communicative, precise and very correct. This makes sure that she will be a nice departmental colleague. Her English is excellent, and she would find no difficulties teaching and communicating in it.
