About Jacob
My name is Jacob. I’ve been sharing my enthusiasm in English for about 7 years. I’ve worked with diverse students from all over the globe in my past teaching positions, and I always found them to be friendly and respectful. My previous teaching experiences have taught me a lot about proper lesson planning, second language pedagogy and methodology. A typical 60 minute class would be structured in the following way: Phonetics and Spelling 10 minutes Vocabulary 10 minutes Grammar 10 minutes Skills work (listening, reading, writing, speaking) 25 minutes Review 5 minutes A 90 minutes class will look the same with more time spent on skills work. As a linguistics student, I use specialised terminology and teaching methods not appropriate for children. Therefore the lessons are for older teenagers and adults. The classes are designed to increase your competence communicating in English by: 1) improving your pronunciation (accent) so you are more intelligible, using phonetic symbols, and learning how to understand phonetic transcriptions 2) increasing your lexical resource to allow you to understand more words receptively and allow you express yourself properly (in class you will learn 10 new words a lesson). You will learn advanced memorisation techniques so you never forget new words and expressions 3) expanding your grammatical range to help make your utterances less lexical and more grammatically complex 4) increasing your competence in all the four language skills; Writing: you will learn how to write texts that are cohesive and coherent Reading: you will read a variety of texts types and learn learning strategies to help you understand what you read Listening: you will hone your listening skills through dictations and TED talks Speaking: helping you express yourself how you truly want. Working at Berlitz taught me valuable principles of a communicative approach.
