About Scott

Meet Your Writing Mentor: Dr. Scott

I’ve spent the last twenty years learning a very important lesson: having a Ph.D. on the wall doesn't mean much if you can't help a student find the right word when it counts. My journey has taken me from the fast-paced world of professional journalism—where deadlines are king and clarity is everything—to university lecture halls and high school classrooms. I’ve worn a lot of hats, but my favorite one is "Coach." I’m here to help you move past the "blinking cursor of doom" and into a place where writing feels like a tool you actually know how to use.

When I’m not helping students polish their prose, I’m usually chasing down my other passions. I’m a bit of a baseball history obsessive; I find there’s a certain magic in the stories hidden within a 1911 box score. I’m also a lifelong fan of tabletop roleplaying games—nothing beats the collaborative storytelling (and the occasional lucky dice roll) of a good Saturday night adventure. And if you happen to smell woodsmoke in the air around Wauwatosa, it’s probably just me tending to a brisket. I’ve found that great writing is a lot like great BBQ: it takes the right tools, a bit of science, and the patience to let things develop "low and slow" until they’re perfect.

I believe that every student has a unique voice and a story worth telling. My goal is to provide the legitimacy of a veteran educator with the approachability of a mentor who actually remembers what it’s like to struggle with a difficult assignment. Whether we’re tackling a college entrance essay or a complex research paper, I’ll be in your corner with a professional editor’s eye and a teacher’s heart. Let’s get to work!

Teaching Philosophy: Where the Newsroom Meets the Seminar

Writing is more than just following rules; it’s about finding a voice that demands to be heard. My teaching approach is built on two pillars: the precision of professional journalism and the depth of academic rigor. With a Ph.D. and years of experience as a beat reporter, I help students strip away the "fluff" to find the clear, powerful narrative underneath. I believe in a warm, encouraging environment where mistakes are viewed as the first draft of a great idea. I don't just "fix" papers; I coach students to become confident, independent thinkers who understand the mechanics of impact.
A Typical Lesson: The Creative Workshop

Every session is tailored to the student’s specific goals, but a standard hour generally follows this flow:

The Check-In (5 mins): We discuss current challenges and wins since our last meeting.

The Deep Dive (20 mins): We review a specific piece of work or a writing prompt, identifying the "core message."

The Editor’s Table (25 mins): This is the active work phase. We use professional editing techniques to refine structure, tone, and clarity in real-time.

The Road Map (10 mins): We set actionable goals for the week ahead so the student knows exactly what to do next.

What Sets Me Apart

I bring a unique "practitioner’s perspective" to the table. While I have the academic credentials of a Ph.D. to handle the most complex literary analysis, my background as a journalist means I understand how writing works in the real world. I teach my students how to write for an audience, meet deadlines, and use storytelling to make their academic work stand out. I am a veteran educator who genuinely loves the "lightbulb moment" when a student realizes they actually have something important to say.
Who These Lessons Are For

I work with a wide range of motivated learners, including:

High School Students: Specifically those tackling the high-stakes world of college admissions essays and AP English.

University Students: Undergraduate and graduate students looking to sharpen their research papers, theses, or dissertation chapters.

Aspiring Writers: Anyone looking to transition from "functional" writing to professional-grade storytelling.
