About Ahaliya
Hello! My name is Ahaliya, and I am a dedicated educator currently pursuing my studies at the University of Alberta. My academic foundation is built on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, a program known globally for its rigorous standards in literacy and critical thinking.
My passion for teaching reading is deeply personal. Having learned English at a young age, I remember firsthand the challenges of navigating a new language, from mastering phonics to understanding complex sentence structures. I haven't just studied English; I have lived the process of mastering it. This experience allows me to identify exactly where a student might be feeling "stuck" and provide the specific, empathetic support they need to break through.

About My Lessons
My Methodology and Techniques
My approach to literacy is rooted in Active Engagement. I don't just have students read aloud; I teach them to "interrogate" the text. I utilize Scaffolded Learning, where I first model a reading strategy (like identifying context clues or predicting outcomes), we practice it together, and then the student applies it independently. I focus heavily on Metacognition—helping students understand how they think while they read so they can catch their own mistakes and improve their fluency.
A Typical Lesson Plan
Each 60-minute session is structured to keep the student focused and motivated:
The Warm-up (10 mins): A quick, high-energy vocabulary game or sight-word drill to build confidence.
The Core Reading (25 mins): We dive into a level-appropriate text. I use the "Think-Aloud" technique to demonstrate how to break down complex sentences and unfamiliar words.
Active Analysis (15 mins): We work on comprehension through verbal summarizing, drawing story maps, or identifying the author's intent.
The Wrap-up (10 mins): A recap of the "Strategy of the Day" and a brief preview of what we will tackle next time.

As an IB Diploma Graduate, I have mastered the art of managing heavy reading loads and high-level analysis. I bring that same discipline and organization to my students. Unlike a standard tutor, I am a current University of Alberta student who understands the modern curriculum and the pressures students face.
