About Gian Lorenzo

I have a wealth of experience tutoring and practicing Game Theory. I have helped both undergraduates who just started out, mature students with gaps in their mathematical and statistical skills, and PhDs at prestigious institution such as Oxford and MIT.

I am very warm, relaxed and non-judgmental, always happy to meet my students wherever they are starting from.

I am quite skilled at finding out the precise conceptual difficulty students face and address it.

My students have a 100% pass rate.

I hold a BSc and MSc in Economics as well as a PhD in Mathematics (with a dissertation involving Evolutionary Game Theory) and I have taught Econometrics and Statistics classes for University of Warwick and University of Bristol.

Game Theory is a challenging and formal subject, I know because I sweated it myself!

I try to make it as easy and painless as possible with a mix of theory and exercises and a lot of examples, either using the student materials or providing my own.

Many students come to me saying that they understand the logic in class, but they are lost when it comes to practice questions. I aim to bridge that gap so you can take your test with confidence, no matter where you are starting from.

I teach any kind of Game Theory at any level from Undergraduate to PhD.

Find out more about Gian Lorenzo

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

The last year of high school I started appreciating mathematics, thanks to an incredibly good tutor in my hometown. After that I went into university in economics and after passing mathematics I started tutoring privately for other students in years below.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach two things, essentially, statistics -- from the ground up with the basics of probability up to the more complicated stuff in hypothesis testing and econometrics -- and microeconomics -- including advanced game theory.

The part I like the most is the more theoretical and mathematical bit, but I always try and make it understandable using examples.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I appreciated two qualities in my teachers: their ability to calmly and gently explain things by step (which at the time blew my mind away) and a good dose of humor to make lesson lighter and more enjoyable. I do my best to adhere to their examples.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A solid knowledge of the materials, a great deal of patience
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember discovering limits and being amazed at the beauty of this definition surrounding infinities, it amazed me and that motivation stuck with me and helped me in choosing a mathematical subject later on.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I am not particularly quick in mental calculations compared to my peers XD, it forces me to be very thorough!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Outside of teaching, I have a passion for music and photography.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

Having not been the strongest student of mathematics, I have a keen eye for understanding where the mistakes a student makes come from and for organizing and summarizing knowledge to fill those gaps. I also happen to enjoy teaching and always establish good rapport with my long term students.
