About Phelan

I have taught; both GCSE, IGCSE and A’ level English Literature & Language, Communication Studies and Theatre Arts in many secondary public and private institutions. One of my greatest challenges in the secondary schools I taught in; was the high volume of non-readers, throughout all the year groups. This caused a considerable amount of difficulty during English Language and Literature; therefore I was forced to use other methods.
He have been a temporary Theatre Arts and Music teacher at The Codrington IB World School, St. John Barbados and thoroughly enjoys this way of hands on teaching.
My most recent post was being commissioned along with my wife to devise and facilitate one week workshops; teaching, teachers how to teach Creative Writing in the classroom for both Primary and Secondary Schools.
I have won the Irvin Burgie Award twice; I am also a Performance Poet, Reggae Singer- working with the likes of Maxi Priest, Collie Budz and opened for Third World. I have acted alongside Rudolph Walker (East-enders) in “Hit for Six”, and other credits include: “The NIS Campaign” and “Comfort Fabric Softener Commercial". I am a Puppeteer and a puppet builder offering classes in this subject area too. My professional work experience also includes: script writing, videography, editing, graphics, teaching leadership skills, public speaking and debating.
I have a great love for animals and wildlife and I practice Recycling, Reducing and Re-using, by making resources needed in disaster times; such as a rocket stove, solar water heaters made from PVC pipes, musical instruments from PVC pipes and lures (bait from fallen or old limber), for fishing.
Basically I have a bariffle of experience, a very good rapport with people of all ages; enjoying the experience of sharing that wealth!

Hello everyone, thanks for reaching out!
I am a secondary teacher/college lecturer with a 2nd class honours degree in English Literatures. I have over 10 years experience in teaching English Language & Literature at GCSE, IGCSE, A'LEVEL, Theatre Arts, Creative Writing, Writing for Academic Purposes for University, and A'LEVEL Communication Studies.
I cater to each learners needs and a firm believer in the 4 learning styles (Visual, Audio, Tactile and Kinetic) and apply them in my teaching style. I encourage learners to think for themselves; teaching them how to develop their research skills.
I use various mediums during my lessons which can be 30, 50 minutes or an hour long; for group and 1-1 learners. I work alongside my wife; who is a Reading Specialist for both children and adults so our age range and experience levels is for 3-18 year olds predominantly. We also offer a Reading & Writing Ability Assessment, which not only determines the reading age; but also, the category of reader the learner is in.
There are 6 categories in reading:
DEPENDENT (reader relies on an experienced reader for total help; like stories being read)
EMERGENT (reader still relies on experienced reader, starts to hold book upright and turn pages of books 'pretending' to read and starts to 'scribble')
INDEPENDENT (reader has sight word recognition, knows alphabet sounds, starts to read books with repeated words, forms coherent sentences)
FLUENT (reader reads with confidence, but still needs help with unfamiliar words, uses syllables, cluster consonant digraphs, starts to use dictionary and write own stories)
EXPERIENCED (reader can read fluently without help, knows how to work out unfamiliar words using many strategies including phonic knowledge and linguistic tools, uses dictionary & thesaurus, enjoys writing own stories, articles, is a good speaker and is speed reading).
Our interest in reading starts for some as young as 3 years old, as DEPENDENT readers; especially if parents are always reading. At this stage we would give our 3-year-old aspirant, lots of puzzles, painting, drawing & colouring, letter art, shopping lists, etc; because the world is surrounded by colour and shapes (the left brain sees the word as a shape and the right brain sees a picture to explain the word/sentence). Let us not forget that reading and writing/composition go hand in hand; so, if you have a child that struggles with composition, they are 9 times out of 10 struggling with reading. From the age of 16 years old onwards, we should be SEASONED readers; once there isn't a cognitive deficit.
Come and find out more, we are eagerly waiting to assist you!
