About Charles
As a teacher and PhD researcher, I take huge pleasure in passing on my love of the ancient world to students of all ages. Classics wasn't offered at my school, so I had to learn as much as I could before I began university. This means I can sympathise with students who have no understanding of Classics beyond Percy Jackson, and equally with those who have been reading the Iliad since Year 8. One of the things I most enjoy is working with students who are struggling. As a personal tutor at my last school, I supported eight sixth-formers through their studies and on to university places, and I'm equally comfortable with students who arrive desperate to learn and those who would rather be anywhere else. Patience matters as much as knowledge in that situation, and students tend to find I have plenty of both.

I tailor each lesson to how the student learns best, rather than applying a single fixed method, drawing on my experience teaching GCSE and A-level students with a range of learning needs, as well as supervising independent research projects one-to-one. Lessons typically run 60 minutes.
I'm a PhD candidate in Ancient History at UCL (part-time, since 2023), with an MA (Distinction) and BA in the same field. From the 2026-27 academic year, I will also teach as a PGTA across three units in UCL's History Department.
I've taught Classical Civilisation, Latin, and Ancient Greek at GCSE and A-level, and have experience supporting first- and second-year undergraduates with essay writing, research skills, and complex historiographical debates.
