About Alexander
I could be described as a rogue, often unorthodox, essentially feral, scholar, often dripping with sarcasm. Painfully aware that philosophy is something that one lives and then tries to explain, not something one tries to explain but does not live. Philosophy cannot be considered merely intellectual exercises which only exist during class hours.
The early, and greatest, philosophers were soldiers and at least one emperor. Stoics lived stoicism, Epicurus lived epicurean life as did his students. Philosophy was their attempts to verbalise lives lived in pursuit of pure truth, justice, virtue, and purpose. They created language where their relentless pursuit of the proper words proved insufficient. It is an insult to those great minds limiting philosophy to an intellectual exercise. Plato, Epicurus, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Nietzsche et al would want to fight you on the playground for limiting life to classroom hours only.
As a native English speaker and student of literature philosophy forced me to become a student of languages and history in order to find deep understanding. Deep understanding is a comprehensive practice frequently unrealised by lazy minds that stop at surface understanding. Deep understanding is what makes thinking possible and that should be your primary objective. As a society we have forgotten how to think. The deep understanding of philosophy will facilitate your learning how to think, not merely regurgitate that which you have been told that you think. Surface understanding may help you pass a quiz administered immediately after the lesson but deep understanding remains with you forever, even when you have forgotten how to verbalize it concisely. One doesn’t truly understand anything unless they can effectively explain it to a five year old. Enjoying your journey is essential for maximizing your success so those lacking a sense of humor can stop here. You won’t like it here and we probably won’t like having you here.
