I tutor younger kids up to 8th grade in all subjects. My main area of expertise is humanities subjects, but I also can teach any math below high school geometry.

As a current student, I am constantly sitting through long boring classes and know how to keep learning fun and engaging. I have been a youth volunteer for six years at conner prairie, so I have experience working with kids, and an evident passion for history. I want to help younger students be as successful as they can be, and adopt a love of learning as I have.

What sets me apart from other tutors is that I also have ADHD, so I have struggled with learning, studying, and focusing. This will help me because I can emphasize and cater to all students (with or without ADHD).

When tutoring, it is important to understand the student before having a full lesson plan. Still, I use the student's interest to connect it to lessons (especially in English history). A typical social studies lesson would be walking through the material. First, labeling what is the most important, whether, it is a turning point in history or something the student is struggling with—then going from there, reviewing, taking notes on the unit, or practicing using flashcards, memorization skills, or games.

Techniques that I have found helpful are the SPQ3R method, the Feynman technique, and note-taking. SPQ3R is a process of surveying, questioning, reading, reciting, and reviewing; this means doing a quick view of the content, finding a few key questions that you don't know or think are important, then reading and memorizing the answers to those questions, this saves time from reviewing concepts you might already know. The Feynman technique is when you write or recite the key ideas and information in your own words or as if you are teaching someone else, and it helps with memorization and understanding. Taking and color coding notes helps you retain the information; I have found that my ability to take organized and thoughtful notes has been a reason for much of my success.
