About Sonie
I hold an MA in Applied Linguistics (Second Language Teaching & Learning) and have several years of experience teaching Mandarin at the university level, in addition to working with learners from a wide range of backgrounds.
My approach is structured and clear, with a strong focus on pronunciation, tones, characters, and the underlying logic of Mandarin grammar.
I guide students through the foundations step by step, helping them understand how the language works rather than relying on memorization. This approach is especially effective for beginners and lower-level learners, who benefit from early clarity in tones, pinyin, and basic sentence structure.

Lessons can take place in the study room of my residence or online, depending on the student’s preference. I generally recommend in-person lessons at my place as it provides clearer instruction and makes it easier to work with pronunciation, tones, and writing practice.
My teaching draws on current research in second language acquisition and focuses on helping learners build a solid foundation in Mandarin. I use structured explanations, comprehensible input, and step-by-step guidance to reduce anxiety and make the learning process clear and manageable.
Unlike teachers who rely mainly on conversation practice, I specialize in guiding beginners and lower-level learners through essential elements such as pinyin, tones, characters, and basic sentence structure. Lessons include meaningful practice, guided interaction, and carefully selected examples, not memorization or drilling.
