About Theirren

Hi there! I’m a third-year Bachelor of Arts in Psychology student at the University of Ottawa, with a very strong academic record and a passion for helping others succeed in their studies. I specialize in breaking down complex psychological theories and research methods into clear, engaging, and relatable lessons. Whether you're a high school student preparing for your psychology exams, or a first- or second-year university student in need of extra support, I’m here to help you feel more confident and in control of your learning. As a university student myself, I find that there is often some disconnect and a lack of relatability between students and teachers/professors. I'd like to help bridge that gap and make learning stress-free. A bit about my academic excellence and accomplishments: - Ontario Scholar upon graduating high school and on Honor Roll every year in high school - Awarded the Human Growth and Development Subject Award upon graduating high school for achieving the highest grade in a psychology-focused course - Received an admission scholarship for graduating high school with an average above a 93% - Current CGPA is above an 8.3 - Dean's Honor List in University - Involved in the Cognition and Anxiety Studies Laboratory at the University of Ottawa, led by Dr. Andrea Ashbaugh I have a strong foundation across various areas of psychology, including: - Child & adolescent development - Social and cultural psychology - Behavioral neuroscience - Research methods and ethics - Psychometric methods - Anthropology and sociology related to health, family, and society

Teaching Methodology and Techniques: As a third-year psychology student, my tutoring approach is built on empathy, clarity, and academic rigor. I focus on: Student-Led Learning: - I encourage active participation and tailor each session to the student’s goals, whether that’s understanding key concepts, improving essay skills, or preparing for exams. Simplifying Complex Ideas: - I break down theories, models, and research findings into digestible, relatable explanations using real-world examples. Evidence-Based Techniques: - I use study strategies grounded in cognitive psychology (like spaced repetition and retrieval practice) to help students retain and apply what they learn. Interactive and Reflective Practice: - Sessions include discussion, mini quizzes, and essay planning to deepen critical thinking and self-awareness in learning. A Typical Lesson Plan: A typical tutoring session is flexible but structured to ensure clear progress: Check-In (5 mins) - Brief catch-up and review of the last session or assigned work. Session Objectives (5 mins) - We set a clear focus, whether it's mastering a topic like cognitive development or working on a past paper. Core Topic Work (20–30 mins) - Clear explanation of the topic, key studies and theories, with guided notes and discussion. - Activities might include evaluating theories, comparing perspectives, or applying to scenarios. Active Application (15–20 mins) - Practice with exam-style questions, essay outlines, or flashcard review. Review and Reflection (5–10 mins) - Recap key takeaways, identify any gaps, and plan next steps or homework. What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor Peer Perspective: - I’m currently studying psychology myself, so I understand the common challenges students face—especially with theory-heavy content, memorization, or critical evaluation. Academic Support + Study Skills: - I go beyond just content—I also teach students how to organize notes, approach essays, and study effectively. Friendly & Approachable: - As a peer tutor, I create a relaxed and supportive learning environment that encourages confidence and curiosity. Up-to-Date Knowledge: - Being an active student means I’m familiar with current course structures, assessment expectations, and recent research trends. Who My Lessons Are For: I offer tutoring for: - High school students newly immersing themselves into psychology - Undergraduate psychology students (1st/2nd year) - Students new to psychology (personal interest/preparing to enter the field) - Neurodivergent or anxious learners
