About Austin
Well, I grew up in a little farming village in the middle of nowhere, U.S.A. And I was always a very curious person, who loved learning about science, history, technology, language, and everything else, but the people around me didn't really show me how to ask good questions and do good research to find out new information.
As I got older, I went off to various universities and traveled all over the world (did I mention I lived in China for six years and have just now relocated to Australia?) and I have been very lucky to learn from lots of different people, and get a lot of practice asking good questions. What makes me love teaching so much is that I get to help other students practice these exact skills that are so important for me, in my own life.
I am happy to discuss my own qualifications and research experiences in more detail, but in short, you might want to know that I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Carroll University in 2016; I double majored in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, or PPE, for short, and Professional Writing. I also had a minor in Chinese Studies, and studied at both Sichuan University and Fo Guang Shan Monastic University for one semester and one summer abroad program, respectively. (我会中文，但是我只有用英文教课). I've worked as a visiting tutor at Lingnan University in Hong Kong and as a teacher at several great high schools in Shenzhen and Shanghai, China. Right now, I'm also a student, getting my master's degree from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
Outside of academics, I'm also always happy to talk about my other passions, like cooking and Brazilian jiu-jitsu; or to hear your stories about your own interests, hobbies, and experiences, because all of these certainly have their own lessons we can learn from them.

This class is meant to get students thinking about who we are as people in a variety of new and exciting ways. We start with prehistory and the early days of human evolution, and track the development of people, cultures, and civilizations through ancient times, various "dark ages" and "renaissances", and eventually get all the way to today (or, tomorrow!). Our real goal in this class is to observe the patterns and trends in various times and places, and look at how we (teachers, students, parents and more!) fit into this larger story of history.
We do cover A LOT of content, including important dates, places, and in some cases, people. That means that there are definitely going to be occasional quizzes and projects for your teacher to assess how much you've been learning, but don't worry, as for the most part, the class assignments and projects will be very flexible, and I work personally with every student to help them design research projects that will suit their interests and skills. That means you might end up writing a paper about a topic that interests you; going to a nearby museum to study unique artifacts; or even exploring archeological sites in your area.
I'm in a good position to help tell these stories and give you advice as you build your own understanding. When I was in high school back in my home town in the United States, I was really fascinated by these questions, and participated in lots of world history, geography, and general knowledge competitions, but I needed to learn a lot more about the story of who we all are and where we all come from. I went to university and got a bachelor's degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, which taught me all about the latest chapters in that story. But while I was at university, I also got to take classes in Anthropology, Archeology, and Ancient History, which all helped me to learn a lot more about the earlier parts of that story. Where I really learned the most though was when I taught history and social studies, as well as liberal arts and cultural studies, at several different high schools and universities in China from 2016 to 2022. During those years, I got to work with hundreds of students in person and in online classrooms, and I learned just how much work goes into asking a good question. Not only did I have to coach my students on how to find their own interests, explore their own ideas, and build their own research skills, but I had to master doing all of these things myself so that I could be a good example for them.
Now, I'm excited to pass that information on to anyone else who is curious about the world around them, the world that came before them, or whatever might come after. The basic course is about 30 lessons, which are mostly about 45 minutes to an hour long with a homework assignment or two between most classes. I like to add in extra material as we go, based on what individual students are interested in, and, as long as students are willing, we'll do a rather involved final project that they will be able to add to their own portfolios and show off to their friends, family, and admissions counselors. I'm starting a master's degree program in February, and will not always be available to answer questions outside of teaching hours, but students are always encouraged to write down their questions and send them to me when they get the chance, and I can guarantee that we will get to it sooner or later. Ideally, I would recommend this course for students between about grades 6 and 10, as some of the themes might be a bit mature, such as wars or "population growth", but we always handle them with academic professionalism. On the other hand, my teaching style is to make lots of silly joke during the class, and adult students might not enjoy the class unless they still remember how to act like children. Really anyone is welcome to sign up if they're interested, and I'm very happy to adjust the course as needed for different students.
