About Thomas

Hi! I'm Thomas, a native English speaker from the United States and a TEFL-certified English tutor with a Bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa.

My interest in teaching English grew naturally through my professional experiences. Throughout my career, I have worked with people from many different countries and language backgrounds. I often found myself helping non-native English speakers understand instructions, learn new skills, communicate with coworkers, and become more comfortable using English in everyday situations. Seeing someone become more confident and independent in a new language is what inspired me to pursue English teaching more seriously.

I'm also a language learner myself. In addition to being a native English speaker, I speak French at a professional level, Spanish at a working level, and I'm currently learning Italian. Learning and using other languages has given me firsthand experience with the challenges of communicating when you know what you want to say but can't quite find the right words. It has also taught me how important patience, encouragement, and regular conversation are when learning a language.

Outside of teaching and languages, I have a wide range of interests, including travel, food, cooking, wine, cinema, literature, history, fitness, and learning about different cultures. I love meeting people from around the world and believe that these interests make it easy to find meaningful topics for conversation.

Most importantly, I want my students to feel comfortable speaking with me. You don't need perfect grammar or pronunciation before you start talking—that's what we're here to work on together.

My lessons focus on helping students use English confidently in real-life situations. Rather than relying only on textbooks and grammar exercises, I build each lesson around conversation and develop vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and comprehension based on each student's needs.

A typical lesson begins with natural conversation, followed by a focused topic or practical situation. We might work on everyday conversation, travel, professional communication, American expressions, pronunciation, or any specific area you want to improve. As we speak, I identify recurring mistakes and help you understand how a native English speaker would express the same idea naturally.

I believe correction should build confidence rather than interrupt it. I encourage students to speak freely first, and then we review serious mistakes, new vocabulary, pronunciation, and useful expressions together.

As a language learner myself, I understand how challenging it can be to communicate in another language. My goal is to create a relaxed and encouraging environment where you feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and experimenting with English.

Every lesson is personalized around your level, interests, and goals, whether you are a beginner building conversational confidence or an advanced speaker who wants to communicate more naturally and effectively.
