About Mo
My name is Mohammed Kakay, and I am a certified English Language instructor based in the Washington DC Metro Area with a genuine passion for helping adult beginners find their voice in English. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English and Linguistics from Salisbury University, a TEFL certification, and Project Management Professional (PMP) and Scrum Master (PSM I) certifications — a combination that reflects not only my commitment to education but my ability to structure learning in a way that produces real, measurable results. Before founding Mo's English Academy LLC, I served as an English Language Learning Instructor at the DC Professional Development Bureau, where I was responsible for designing the program's curriculum entirely from scratch. That experience gave me a deep understanding of how adult learners acquire language and what it takes to build a program that actually works.
My teaching method is communicative, structured, and entirely student-centered. Every lesson is carefully planned to build on the one before it, introducing new vocabulary, phrases, and real-world scenarios in a logical sequence that keeps students engaged and progressing. I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach — each student begins with a personal intake assessment so that lessons are tailored to their goals, learning style, and pace from day one. To further support my students between sessions, I provide custom bilingual reference guides in Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and French, ensuring that language barriers never become a barrier to learning.
These lessons are designed for adult beginners and elementary-level learners at the CEFR A1 to A2 level, with a particular focus on Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and French-speaking students who are building their English foundation for daily life, work, or community settings in the United States. I offer both private one-on-one sessions and small group classes, available online via Google Meet or Zoom and in-person throughout the Washington DC Metro Area. When you choose to learn with me, you are not simply hiring a tutor — you are investing in a structured, professional learning experience delivered by an instructor who is as committed to your progress as you are.

My teaching approach is built on structure, clarity, and real-world communication. Having designed the English Language Learning curriculum for the DC Professional Development Bureau from scratch, I bring more than just tutoring experience — I bring genuine curriculum expertise. Every lesson follows a clear, scaffolded progression where new material builds directly on what came before, so students never feel lost or overwhelmed. I use a communicative method focused on practical language skills: greetings, daily routines, workplace conversations, and real-life scenarios students will actually encounter. Lessons run 45 or 90 minutes and always end with a clear takeaway and a self-study recommendation to reinforce progress between sessions.
What sets me apart is the combination of credentials, discipline, and personalization I bring to every student. I hold a TEFL certification, a BA in English and Linguistics, and PMP and Scrum project management certifications — which means I approach your learning goals the same way I approach any project: with clear milestones, measurable progress, and a plan that adapts when needed. My eight years in law enforcement sharpened my ability to communicate clearly, read people quickly, and explain the same concept multiple ways until it truly clicks. I also provide custom bilingual reference guides in Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and French so students can study independently in their native language — a level of support most tutors don't offer.
These lessons are designed specifically for absolute beginners and elementary-level adult learners at the CEFR A1–A2 level, particularly those whose first language is Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, or French. Whether you're an immigrant navigating daily life in the US, a professional building workplace English, or someone who has tried apps and classes before without success, my lessons meet you exactly where you are. Sessions are available one-on-one or in small groups, online via Google Meet or Zoom, or in-person in the Washington DC Metro Area. Before we begin, every student completes an intake assessment so the curriculum is shaped around your specific goals, learning style, and pace — because no two students are the same.
