About Brooke
I am a World Language tutor, specialized in French, though I am seeking to add more languages to my repertoire. In May of 2026, I will graduate from the Ohio State University with a Bachelor’s degree in World Language Education and French. I will be licensed to teach all ages, though I have more experience teaching in a high school setting. I believe language learning should be meaningful, engaging, and empowering. I want to provide my students with a deep understanding of other cultures, as well as a deeper awareness of their own. I want them to grow in empathy for others, and I believe that learning another language can greatly increase one’s empathy. They will need intercultural competence and empathy as they move out into the world and encounter different people. I will model this by respecting my students' Funds of Knowledge no matter their background. I want to honor any languages that are used by my students as valid forms of expression and communication. I believe that there is a lot that I can learn from my students. However, I do believe in working my students toward proficiency in the target language. I want my students to feel comfortable simultaneously with my desire to push them to use French as much as possible. I believe that phonics are the building blocks to understanding written and spoken language and can provide confidence for students to continue learning, speaking, and writing. By phonics I mean the sounds created in a spoken language, and how those sounds are represented in written language. With the French language in particular, the sounds and the combinations of symbols that create those sounds are not immediately intuitive for most French language learners. I want to give my students as near a native ear as possible, without spending months in France. I want them to feel confident about how to pronounce a word that they are reading or to know that they heard someone correctly. I believe it is important to teach phonics alongside authentic and comprehensible spoken and written language in order to give context to the sounds. I want to provide my students, not only with another language in their toolbox, but also with the means and the motivation to pursue learning other languages that they would find useful. All in all, I believe that I don’t know what is best thus I will always seek to learn and grow as an instructor. I am committed to being a lifelong learner. I am passionate, hard-working, diligent, and thoughtful about my instruction. I am excited to work with my students creatively to find a strategy that works well for them.

My methods and philosophies align with the most recent research. I want to focus on language learning holistically. It is an important life skill, not just a fun hobby, though it still should be fun!
My typical lesson plans will include a lot of visuals to hasten my students toward thinking in French.
My lessons are personalized to my students so that they can learn what will actually be useful and relevant to them.
My lessons will integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing with a progressing trajectory toward proficiency.
I want to provide you with the tools to navigate any situation in French, and the tools to further your learning as you go out into the world.
My lessons are for people of all ages and levels.
