I always prefer to teach background of topic which is to be learn, i.e. why we need to study this topic?, how it will be beneficial for student.
In my opinion crux of any subject in fact of any topic is its nomenclature. If we can understand 'Why a particular topic named so?' we can get 50% of meaning of that topic.
Secondly I we can imagine that concept with certain depth we can get remaining 50% of that concept. Then such understanding of topic will definitely last for long time.
