About Laurie
I was fortunate enough to grow up in the pre-computer era, when children had opportunities to explore their creativity: at school, we were painting, drawing and making things all the time.
I learned the art of tie-dye, and we were taught to crochet. At home, my mum was a gifted seamstress, knitter and baker, and I learned to do all of these things. By the time I was sixteen, I was customising my dad's jackets and making my own outfits!
Creating has always been second nature to me, and it continues to serve a number of purposes: it's calming, satisfying and in a fast-paced world where everything is about devices and short attention spans, creating reminds me of the importance of purpose and connection.
As a private tutor, I had a steady stream of pupils for over twenty years: parents saw me as a safe pair of hands and word of mouth meant I never had to advertise my services.
Since starting out as a craft teacher, I have enjoyed the confidence of charity leaders, who have invited me back run classes for children and adults. One organisation described me as a 'safe pair of hands'. I am in my element when teaching others.
I have a daughter in her twenties whose creative expression I have nurtured and who is now an artist in her own right.

Building a student's confidence is my top priority as a teacher. My first task is to make sure they feel they can succeed in their subject, so I create an environment that is warm, welcoming and encouraging.
Making a subject come alive is important, and I bring my own enthusiasm to a lesson. If I impart information in a way that makes a subject relevant to my students, they will be enthused, interested and motivated to succeed.
I make learning a joy, and I bring humour to sessions.
I set great store by empathy. I let my students know that I appreciate how difficult a task can seem, and then I break it down for them, taking each stage one step at a time and practising it with them until they get it.
I am happy to demonstrate a new skill and then follow their lead, letting them try by themselves until they have mastered that new skill.
After thirty years, I'd say I'm pretty good at knowing what different students need, whether they are visual, or kinaesthetic learners, and I adapt with ease to the needs of individual learners.
I am an intuitive and knowledgeable teacher, and my crochet and string art classes are guaranteed to be most enjoyable.
I have a PGCE and qualified thirty years ago as a German and French teacher. As well as working in mainstream schools, I was a private tutor for twenty-one years and have run a number of community education projects in the West London area.
I have been hired to run string art classes and crochet courses by and on behalf of Ealing Council, Imperial College and the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, to name a few.
A typical lesson will last 90 minutes, but can be longer, depending on the activity. Lessons are for students aged 13 years to adults who are keen to explore crafting as a way of developing a new interest, or who require a creative outlet to maintain their mental health and well being.
