About Catherine
After practicing classical ballet dance in my childhood and adolescence, I discovered Indian dance in 1998, more specifically Bharata Natyam (classical dance from south-east India) with Swati Hily then Yousuf Kazi. I followed a 4-year teacher training course with Mrs. Sivaselvi Sarkar and started teaching Bharata Natyam dance in 2003 and Bollywood choreography in 2009 within the Mira-Baï association, which I co- founded with 3 other people in 1999. I am still part of the association's teaching team, with my husband Yousuf Kazi among others and I propose to devote a little time to online courses!

Also trained in the approach of Gasquet (post-respiratory gym), I propose a warm-up which mixes these principles with the more traditional Indian elements, close to yoga. If it is a Bharata Natyam course we will approach at the beginning the important technique of striking the feet on the ground, the posture with certain positions of the arms and legs so characteristic, the hand gestures (mudras). Then gradually pure dance elements called adavus. My principle is not to go too fast in the variety of these adavus, having as a principle that good gestural and postural habits are important to correctly approach more complex steps. This style being very rigorous and precise, the progression is slow at the beginning. But if you hold on and if you know how to attach to details, progress is all the faster once the bases are installed. Concerning the learning of a dance, we remain in the principle of progressiveness: a prayer danced when the gestures and the posture begin to be established then a small dance purely technical simple, then more complex ... The course often ends by stretching exercises. If it is a Bollywood dance class, the technique is approached through the choreographies. Elements of classical gestures often begin the course after the warm-up. Bollywood dances are not strictly speaking a style, but for our choreographies, they draw many elements from Bharata Natyam dance without imparting the same rigor. We mix various influences according to the inspirations ... The spirit is different from the Bharata Natyam dance because more playful and less precise.
