  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I loved geography at university. From the first lecture I went to, I found all aspects of the subject fascinating. I started doing private tuition in my first year of teaching. It's very rewarding as students make excellent progress on a one to one basis.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Geography is about our environment and the opportunities and challenges it offers us. I particularly love the environmental aspects of geography. At the moment, we have very little time to manage the impacts of climate change, so it's an incredibly important topic.
Changing Spaces was a new topic in A level geography in 2016 and many students struggled with it. Having taught it over the years, I've made it much more interesting and accessible to students.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My development geography lecturer at university. She was so passionate about her subject and spent most of her holidays in Gambia working with local communities.
I also love Professor Iain Stewart's documentaries as he really brings physical geography alive.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor.

You need to be really flexible and ready to adapt your lesson at a moment's notice as the lesson is completely personalised to the student's needs, not prepared for a whole class.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

My friend saw a lovely house on the North Norfolk coast, with amazing sea views. It was cheap enough to buy without a mortgage and my friend suggested I should buy it. As a geographer, I was aware that this house was in danger of being lost to coastal erosion and didn't buy it! This is an example of the practical knowledge that geography provides.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I have dyspraxia so it took me a bit longer to learn to use maps in the field, but I overcame this with time. Having dyspraxia and having taught in special education gives me a real understanding of how to support students with specific learning difficulties and many of them have gone on to get top grades with me.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Geography is all about what's happening in the world right now. My passion is providing young people with the knowledge they need to make the world a better place.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I have worked as a head of geography for many years and my students have achieved excellent grades. I am an a level geography and IB geography examiner, as well as being an IB geography internal assessment moderator and a level NEA moderator. Several of my 13+ students have won scholarships to Eton and Westminster.
