Kala has an excellent grasp of Kiswahili, and she makes a splendid teacher because she lived there and also knows the culture. In addition, she is able to translate the various idioms that can be difficult for non-Native English speakers (many Africans Swahili teachers don’t quite understand plays on words, for example). Plus she is just a great person. Highly recommended.

I studied Swahili with Kala at university level and have spent much time with her during her 10+ years in East Africa, particularly in Tanzania. I know first-hand that she has a thorough understanding of both standard Zanzibari and mainland Swahili. She is also a highly committed individual who will go above and beyond to ensure her students receive the best possible education. Finally, she is a extremely fun and amicable person who will be a pleasure to learn from.

I know Kala in person. She has impeccable knowledge in Swahili, be it written or oral. Apart from the formal knowledge that gave her good understanding of the language, She lived in areas with best Swahili speakers , the coasts of East Africa where Arabs resided and most swahili words are borrowed from. She knows traditions associated with Swahili speakera and has a wide knowledge of African traditions. She knows Swahili slangs and as She has been leaving around Us for a good amount of years without a need of translation. She managed Swahili speaking workshops for fundi's where she could communicate properly without stutter. She gave her daugher a good Swahili foundation that I admored her for. Her being British helped Us with good choice of Swahili words when we wanted to address an issue.
I highly recommend her. (If there could be an option to attach I could attach several text messages that she has been writing in Swahili to me from back then.)
