I focus on helping students build a strong conceptual understanding first, rather than just memorising solutions. I encourage them to explain their thought process so I can see where they might be confused, and I guide them to find the answer themselves through hints and step-by-step reasoning.
In terms of techniques, I like to break problems into smaller parts, use simple examples to illustrate complex ideas (especially in topics like recursion and data structures), and often draw diagrams or use pseudo-code if that helps. I also encourage students to trace code by hand and to write test cases so they develop good debugging habits.
For lesson length, in workshops it usually aligns with the unit’s session times, but when helping students one-on-one or in small groups, I find that about 30 to 60 minutes is effective — long enough to tackle a concept or an assignment question without overwhelming them.
