1. Introduction to Ragas and Talas
-Ragas are melodic frameworks in Indian classical music, while talas are rhythmic cycles. Students will learn about different ragas and talas, their characteristics, and how they are structured.
2. Sargam
- Sargam is the Indian equivalent of solfege. It involves singing the seven notes of the scale (Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni) in various patterns and sequences. Students will practice sargam exercises to develop their ear and vocal control.
3. Alankaar
- Alankaar refers to melodic embellishments used in Indian music. Students will learn different Aalankara patterns to embellish their melodies and enhance their improvisational skills.
4. Basic Vocal Exercises
- Vocal exercises such as meend (glides), gamak (oscillations), and taans (fast melodic passages) will be taught to improve voice control, pitch accuracy, and stamina.
5. Composition and Improvisation
- Students will learn about the structure of compositions in Indian classical music, including compositions like khayal, thumri, and bhajan. They will also learn how to improvise within the framework of a raga and tala.
6. Performance Practice
- Regular practice and performance are essential for progress in Indian music. Students will have opportunities to perform in class and in front of their teacher to receive feedback and guidance.
7. Theory and History
- Alongside practical lessons, students will learn about the theoretical concepts behind Indian classical music, including the origins, historical development, and different gharanas (musical lineages).
8. Individualized Instruction
- Lessons will be tailored to the individual student's level, interests, and goals, whether they are beginners looking for a general introduction to Indian music or more advanced students aiming for mastery in a specific area.
