About Carlijn
I've been lucky to have learned with several committed and interested music teachers, so I know what a huge difference that can make to someone's learning experience. I'm friendly, encouraging and knowledgeable, with a lot of teaching experience to help me finetune lessons to individual students. My aim is for you to come away from each lesson feeling motivated and confident.

In our lessons, I'll ask you about your learning goals and interests, and tailor the lessons around what you would like to achieve and learn about. I offer 30, 45 and 60 minute lessons. For music theory, I find 45 minute lessons allow students to stay focused and get the most out of their lesson. For composition, I would recommend 60 minute lessons, as that tends to be more exploratory. It's completely up to you though!
I've taught at schools, conservatoire and university. I have a teaching degree, a Master in Musicology: Communication and Education, and a Bachelor and PgDip in Composition. I'm also finishing a PhD in Composition. As a composer, I've written for Dutch National Opera, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, RSNO, BBC NOW, Concertgebouworkest Young, and LPO. I'm happy to teach at any level from age 8 upwards.

Perfect! Carlijn has been a great help to my son with his Advanced Higher Music. She's knowledgeable, reliable, and explains things clearly. He's grown more confident in his work since starting lessons with her. She strikes a good balance between being encouraging and keeping him focused, and she tailors her approach to suit his learning style. I highly recommend her.

Carlijn helped me tremendously while working on the musicology aspects of my dissertation. I always struggled a bit with these concepts, but her explanations were so clear and concrete, which was incredibly reassuring and motivating.
