About Surajit
Dr. Surajit Chakraborty had his education at Jadavpur University and Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur. He was awarded the doctoral degree by Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur in 2008 for his research work on “Assessment and Management of Groundwater Resource for English Bazar Block, Malda District of West Bengal, using Remote Sensing and GIS” from the Department of Mining and Geology. Since then, he was fully engaged, in full time research and teaching at IISWBM on subject remote sensing and GIS and contributed remarkably towards developing GIS for various environmental applications. A hydro-geologist by profession, he has gained experience in hydrogeological investigation involving GIS, remote sensing, and groundwater modeling. He has undertaken more than 10 R&D and consultancy projects in water resources and mining sectors. He published and presented more than 20 research papers in international and national journals, conference proceedings etc. on various themes of remote sensing and GIS applications to environment, land use/ land cover, spatial data analysis, water resources, transportation planning, watershed management and environmental modelling. Dr. Chakraborty is the Life-member of the Mining, Geological, and Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI) and Online member of The International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH/AIH). Dr. Chakraborty has been engaged with several NGOs in capacity building in the field of remote sensing and GIS and vulnerable mapping and environmental sustainable development activities. Currently as the Assistant Professor and Coordinator in the department of environment management he is actively engaged in research and teaching. Completed a finer-scale numerical groundwater flow models to understand arsenic transport in Jamuna sub-basin in Nadia and North 24 Parganas of West Bengal, funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India as a Co-investigator and on hydrogeological study of subsurface water flow and other characteristics of River Dwarakeswar in Bankura-I block funded by the Public Health Engineering Department, Government of West Bengal. Presently Dr. Chakraborty is presently engaged in a joint collaborative research project with Central University Gujarat on delineation of groundwater potential zones using multi-band Remote Sensing data and GIS for sustainable water resources management in semi-arid hard rock terrain of Para block, Puruliya district, West Bengal.
