As a student, I find that understanding the phenomenon rather than the particular aspects is what makes someone strong (or on the other end of the spectrum, lost) in science. I propose a more pragmatic approach (I am a student so I think I know where spending a lot of time is a waste of time) which emphasizes a good understanding of the content of the course (math in particular) and accompanied by various resources.
