About Tonia
"Teaching chess allows me to break down complex board states into manageable patterns for students across Canberra. I hold an International Master title which informs my approach to coaching both online and in person. My focus remains on systematic improvement to ensure students see their FIDE rating grow steadily over 9 years of teaching.
Watching a player grasp a difficult concept after months of work defines my success as a coach. Developing a strong competitive mindset requires more than just memorizing openings. I emphasize defensive technique and piece coordination to build a foundation that supports your growth. You can count on my analytical perspective to refine your play style."

"Starting our first session involves analyzing a game you recently played to identify exactly where your decision making faltered. Since I have competed at the international level, I focus on game analysis and pawn structures to sharpen your tactical vision.
King safety becomes a priority in our work because small oversights often lead to quick losses. 10 percent of our time is dedicated to recording and notation accuracy.
Mastering attacking play happens through consistent practice during our 7 minute blitz reviews. These brief segments clarify why certain moves create pressure while others invite counterattacks. I look forward to helping you improve your board awareness during our next session."
