I am a Chemistry tutor with 7 years of experience and an MSc in Chemistry. I have taught over 240 students and have developed a specific expertise in examination strategy alongside subject knowledge, because I have observed consistently that what students know and what they are able to demonstrate in an examination are often significantly different, and that this gap is reducible through targeted strategic preparation. My Chemistry teaching specifically addresses the examination strategy dimension that is often neglected in content-focused tuition, because excellent Chemistry knowledge that is poorly deployed in an examination produces lower grades than slightly less complete knowledge that is strategically well presented. I work with students on time management in Chemistry examinations — knowing approximately how many minutes each mark should take, how to prioritize questions when time is running short, when to move on and come back — because these strategic decisions significantly affect the total marks available within the time limit. My approach to long-answer Chemistry questions teaches students to use the mark allocation as a structural guide — a six-mark question requires six distinct correct points, and students who can identify what those six points should be before they start writing consistently score more marks than those who write first and count marks second. I address the difference between describing, explaining, and evaluating in Chemistry answers because examination questions use these command words with specific, distinct meanings and students who confuse them consistently lose marks even when they know the relevant Chemistry. Practical evaluations — questions asking students to evaluate experimental methods, suggest improvements, or calculate percentage error — are practiced extensively because they are consistently among the most poorly answered question types and consistently worth significant marks. I run timed practice with real past papers from the specific examination board the student is sitting because paper familiarity — knowing the question style, the layout, the typical mark scheme language — is a genuinely valuable component of examination readiness. My teaching goal is a student who extracts the maximum possible marks from their Chemistry knowledge in every examination.
