About Steven
- What kind of experience do you have? I first started offering private GCSE maths tuition around 20 years ago whilst researching my PhD. I found it to be very rewarding, and quickly realised that I could make a real difference to my pupil's exam grades. I taught mathematically based subjects as a senior university lecturer for 7 years prior to offering private maths tuition on a full-time basis. Whilst teaching at university I often taught those students that struggled with their maths, and so over time, I developed effective techniques for helping pupils overcome their fear of maths. I explain the often abstract concepts of maths using easy to understand jargon-free language and have a relaxed and informal approach to tuition. This helps to create a no-pressure environment where students do not feel judged and are able to feel comfortable asking questions. As an author and marker of exam scripts I have the experience to help my students to approach their own exams in a more effective manner. I have also worked for the Open University and so am experienced with the concept of distance and e-learning and so also offer online tuition. - Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? Full time professional maths tutor. Specialist tutor for the QTS Numeracy Skills Test. Also maths tutor for KS2, KS3 and GCSE. I have around 20 years tutoring experience. - Which subject(s) do you teach? QTS Skill Test (numeracy test) Maths KS2, KS3, GCSE - Tell me about your qualifications. First Class BEng Aerospace Engineering (1995) - Manchester University PhD Mechanical Engineering (Dynamics) (1998) - Manchester University, Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching & Learning (2006) - How much do you charge? My rates start from £30 for a 1 hour tutoring session. - Where do you teach? Studio in Disley, Stockport. I also have significant experience in online tuition and have tutored students from all over the UK and internationally using this approach. - When are you available? I am flexible with my availability and can offer weekday/weekend daytime/evenings. My availability is changing on a weekly basis so please enquire for further details - I can usually fit you in to my schedule somewhere! - Which ages and levels do you teach? I have experience working across all age groups from primary to adult learners. I cover all the main exam boards. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for? QTS numeracy test GCSE Maths - Describe your arrangements for online tutoring. I use Skype and scribblar for online tuition - Do you have a personal message for students? I make sure all my students are competent in the fundamental building blocks of maths first before moving on to more advanced areas where appropriate. I also offer help with exam strategy and note-taking so that pupils have the greatest chance possible of achieving their true potential mark.
