About Grant
I’m a Japanese language specialist based in Tokyo, with years of experience living, studying, and working in Japan. I currently research Japanese history at the University of Tokyo, so if you’re into history, I have you covered.
I love breaking down Japanese into simple, learnable steps without losing sight of your goals. I also have past experience tutoring at university, and with a linguistics background (a bit nerdy, I know), you can expect as much or as little detail as you need.
I’m known for clear explanations, detailed feedback, and a focus on real-world communication — especially politeness and keigo (it’s not difficult, I promise!) for work and daily life.

My lessons are personalised to your goals (travel, daily conversation, workplace Japanese, or JLPT).
I can adapt my teaching material to meet your needs. If there's a specific textbook, novel, or any other media or aspect of the language you want help with — let me know.
JLPT
I passed JLPT N1 (2021) and genuinely enjoy the inner workings of Japanese — yes, including grammar.
If you’re aiming to pass the JLPT, we’ll build a clear study plan and keep you on track. Grammar, listening, vocabulary, kanji — whatever you need, I’m your “make Japanese feel doable” sensei.
SPEAKING PRACTICE
Speaking is the part most learners struggle with. My aim is to get you talking as much as possible, with supportive corrections and useful phrases you can reuse.
These lessons focus on asking and answering questions naturally, so you can rely less on English over time. We’ll discuss topics you actually need in daily life — and topics you genuinely enjoy.
SKILL-BASED COURSE:
JAPANESE POLITENESS AND HONORIFICS (敬語・keigo)
Politeness is everything in Japanese, and it can make a real difference in how you come across. This is an especially useful skill if you plan to work or study in Japan.
I'll take you from honorifics from "zero to hero" in no time! I'm developing a course on this topic right now — more info on my website kotobakun.com
JAPANESE ACCENT REDUCTION
Want to sound clearer and more natural? This course covers key aspects of Japanese pronunciation, including vowels and consonants, pitch accent, filler words, and particles.
Everything is tailored to you and your level — prepare to hear many "nihongo jōzu ("you're Japanese is great") from native speakers.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I've been studying with Grant for about 5 years now. He's an amazing teacher with a wealth of knowledge. He often shares interesting (and relevant) stories about his experience of living in Japan and China and what parts of Japanese language and culture are essential to master when trying to communicate effectively in Japanese. I think he also does a great job of walking through such explanations and/or adjusting to my level when I'm struggling to understand something. I can't recommend him enough!
