• Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

  I speak Portuguese as it is my mother tongue. I love teaching my language and sharing my culture across the globe.
  Also, I have studied English, French, Spanish, and Japanese over the years.

• Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

  Zé Povinho - This fictional character symbolises the Portuguese working-class people, and it is the unofficial personification of Portugal.

• Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

  Like any other language, Portuguese has some words that just can't be translated. My favourite is "Saudade". This word represents the feeling of missing someone, but it's so much deeper than that. Expresses the pain, anxiety and sadness when someone is absent.

• Why does speaking this language matter to you?

  Portuguese is widely spoken. You can speak Portuguese in Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe, and even in Sri Lanka, Goa, India and Macau and China!

• What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help the process of learning?

  Grammar is one of the most challenging aspects to learn, as some of the structures and verbs don't exist in other languages such as English. To help my students understand the grammar, I give them several examples, and we do exercises together.

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

  Most words have gender in Portuguese, so we need to use a different article, a or o, accordingly ( a for female and o for male words). It's always fun to hear when the students mix them up.

• How has travel or a specific trip helped you increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

  I now live in the UK, and living here was one of the most valuable experiences to learn a language.

• What makes you a Superprof in language?

  I'm very committed to my work and students. I always ask for feedback, and I actively listen to my students.
