  • 1) When and how did you first discover your craft?

I discovered my craft in high school, during a school play rehearsal. Something about stepping into a character, interpreting text, and creating a shared moment with an audience lit a fire in me. It wasn't just performance that drew me in-it was the collaborative nature of theatre and the powerful social commentary it can evoke. From there, I pursued drama academically and professionally, and it's been a deeply fulfilling journey.
  • 2) Which artists or artworks have inspired you the most?

I'm deeply inspired by the work of South African playwrights like Athol Fugard and Lara Foot for their raw honesty and ability to tell local stories with universal resonance. Internationally, Viola Davis's commitment to truth in performance and Ntozake Shange's poetic defiance have also shaped my own approach. I find inspiration not only in artists but in the everyday resilience and creativity of my students.
  • 3) What are the qualities and skills required to succeed in this domain?

You need a combination of emotional intelligence, adaptability, discipline, and deep curiosity. Success in the arts isn't only about talent-it's about how you observe the world, respond to change, and maintain integrity in your expression. Strong communication skills, patience, and the ability to collaborate are also essential, especially in teaching or directing.
  • 4) What is the most valuable advice you could give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Create small, manageable goals and hold yourself accountable to them. Surround yourself with a supportive community, and don't be afraid to make "bad" work-it's all part of the process. Most importantly, remember your "why"-why you started in the first place. That passion will anchor you during the messy parts of creation.
  • 5) How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

My passion feels like a pulse-steady, present, and essential. It makes me feel alive, purposeful, and connected. When I'm directing a play or guiding a student through a monologue, I feel like I'm contributing to something greater than myself: expression, empathy, transformation.
  • 6) What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

I'm proud of the curriculum-aligned theatre study guides I've developed for South African learners, which make complex texts more accessible. Directing student productions that moved audiences and watching learners take ownership of their work is incredibly rewarding. Also, being able to mentor students who go on to pursue drama seriously is a great source of pride.
  • 7) Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their talent, abilities or quick progression?

Absolutely. I once had a student who barely spoke during the first term, but when given a script, they transformed. Their performance was emotionally rich and instinctively nuanced-it reminded me never to underestimate the quiet ones. Talent can be hidden beneath shyness, and all it takes is the right space to unlock it.
  • 8) Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

My secret is genuine connection and personalised learning. I make an effort to understand each student's rhythm, goals, and learning style. I also stay grounded in the belief that teaching is a form of storytelling-when you can engage the imagination, learning becomes unforgettable.
