About Patrick
Singing is personal, so my lessons are a space where trying things out is completely normal. I'll ask you to make silly sounds, sirens, sighs and exaggerated vowels, often alongside me, because those sounds tell us more about your voice than careful, polite singing does. I listen closely to where your voice changes texture, where your jaw or shoulders tighten, and where a note suddenly gets easier, and I tell you exactly what I noticed.
If an instruction doesn't help, I stop repeating it and try another way in. I might have you sing while bending over at the waist, while gently moving your jaw with your hand, or while imagining calling to someone across a field. Sometimes the answer is a straw, sometimes it's speaking the line, and sometimes it's just listening back to a recording. Children usually love the playful sounds. Teenagers often want to know how their favorite singers do it. Adults often want to understand the mechanics. I'm happy to explain as much or as little as is useful.
A lesson with me feels warm and practical. There's no pressure to perform for me. We try a phrase, talk briefly about what happened, change one thing, and try again. I'll be honest about what's working and what isn't, always in terms of what you can actually change.
I work with complete beginners who've only sung in the car, returning singers who once sang in a choir, teenagers preparing for auditions, and experienced performers who want more ease and consistency. In every case I want you to leave knowing your own voice better than when you arrived, and to know what to do when a phrase gets difficult.

Many people think their singing voice is something separate from the voice they talk with, something you either have or don't. In my lessons we start with your speaking voice, because it's already coordinated, relaxed and expressive. We'll often speak the words of a song in rhythm, then speak them on a comfortable pitch, then slowly let the speech turn into melody. For a first-time singer who isn't sure they can hold a tune, this gives an easy starting point. For an experienced singer whose voice sounds forced in one part of a song, it's a way to find out where the natural coordination got lost and bring it back.
Pitch is something you learn, not something you're simply born with. If matching notes is new to you, we'll use slides: you start on a comfortable sound and glide slowly up or down until your note locks onto mine, and you learn what "in tune" feels like inside your head and body, not only how it sounds. More advanced singers use the same sliding work to clean up wide intervals, so the voice knows its destination before the jump. We also use straw phonation and lip trills, singing a whole phrase through a straw or on a "brr", because they balance breath and vocal fold pressure. When you go back to the words, the voice usually feels freer, and you'll understand why it worked.
Breath is planned from the end of the phrase. A familiar frustration is running out of air before the last line, or snatching a breath that throws off the next entry. Instead of general breathing exercises, we look at the phrase and decide where it needs to end strongly, then mark breaths backward from there so you're never surprised. High notes get similar attention. We work on adjusting vowels, slightly opening an "ee" or rounding an "ah", so that a note that once felt like a squeeze has room to sit. Singers who already have range often find this is what makes their top notes reliable instead of hit-or-miss.
All of this happens in the songs you want to sing, whether that's musical theatre, pop, folk, jazz, choral parts or classical pieces. We record short sections during the lesson so you can hear what I'm hearing, because the voice sounds very different from inside your own head. Over time you'll learn to warm up properly, diagnose a tired or strained moment yourself, and practise in a way that keeps your voice healthy.
