About Stefano

[The boring part]
In the past ten years, I have taught intellectual property law, competition law, information technology law, and legal technology (as well as European Union law and international law) to hundreds of undergraduate and postgraduate students (including civil servants) in the UK. I have directed two LLM courses and led a major research centre in LegalTech, while always keeping a focus on my students and their journey into the world of law. I have published widely in peer-reviewed academic journals, and presented my research at conferences and in the media. I am currently taking a short break from my academic work, while I support my partner's career in Austria and focus on the writing of a new textbook.

[The more fun part!]
Law is the foundation upon which our society is built. I have always been fascinated by the role it plays in supporting science and culture, shaping our lives and social relationships, and influencing the future of our society. As a student, I was fascinated by constitution-making processes; as a lawyer, I discovered the ins and outs of business and corporate law (and a bit of criminal too!); as an academic, I have found my greatest passion in the world of copyright, patents, trade marks, and their many ramifications in other fields (from competition law, to international and EU law, information technology, etc.). More recently, I have worked extensively on legal technology, leading my team of researchers towards the edges of current legal knowledge (i.e. developing chatbots to support access to justice, applying large language models to legislation, designing smart contracts for the licensing of IP assets, and more).

My passion, and curiosity, for the law has always been accompanied by the desire to help others understand and engage with it. When you study law, you may feel like you are just memorising a lot of information. I think there is a lot more to it - you are learning a set of principles and relationships that you can use to understand how the law works, apply it, and influence the way in which it will evolve over time. This perspective allows you to be much more than a passive learner: you become a future practitioner, scholar or policy-maker, even if you are still a student. And, when your studies have come to an end, you possess the tools and attitude you need to effect real change in our society through the practice of law. This is what I am truly passionate about: helping new legal minds achieve their potential and change the (legal) world.

I enjoy supporting students in developing a thorough understanding of the principles, key concepts and relationships that underpin the relevant area of law. While this requires more effort than developing a superficial understanding of the subject, it also unlocks your potential to become a highly competent, skilled and responsible practitioner. What characterises the most successful lawyers, judges or scholars is their ability to understand (and help others understand) the law, rather than just apply it.

My classes are delivered online and last for 60 minutes. Depending on your specific needs, we work together, engaging with relevant materials, in a seminar (i.e. interactive and discussion-based) style. For example:

- if you seek support with a specific topic (e.g. trade mark infringement, state responsibility in international law, or the enforceability of smart contracts), we will contextualise the topic and discuss relevant primary and secondary sources, such as case law and journal articles, determining the key principles that are relevant for the subject and discussing their concrete application;

- if you seek support with a major piece of research, such as a postgraduate dissertation or PhD, we will discuss the challenges you are encountering and work on both (i) any content or research question that is proving challenging, and (ii) your research methodology and writing style, as both aspects are relevant in this case.

Of course, if you need some more general support (e.g. how to approach essay-based or scenario-based assessment, how to implement a successful study method that works for you, or how to develop your CV to maximise your chances of future professional success), I am more than happy to help.

Law is a serious and important subject, but also a fun one. Let me know what your needs are and I will do my best to help you enjoy your studies!
