About Amy

I am a friendly, approachable and enthusiastic person who genuinely enjoys working with young people and helping them build confidence in themselves and their abilities. I understand that every student is different, so I always try to create a relaxed and positive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and learning at their own pace.

I would describe myself as patient, understanding and encouraging. Building a good relationship with students is very important to me, as I believe students learn much better when they feel comfortable and respected. I like to bring humour and personality into my lessons while still keeping them focused and productive.

Outside of teaching, I enjoy reading and have a particular interest in history, politics and current affairs. I also enjoy encouraging students to develop their own interests, whether these are academic or completely separate from school. I have been involved in extracurricular activities such as running a school Book Club, which has allowed me to connect with students in a more informal setting and encourage a love of reading.

I am also someone who is always looking to improve and learn new things myself. I regularly take part in professional development and enjoy finding new and creative ways to make learning more interesting and accessible.

Most importantly, I want students to feel that tutoring is a supportive space rather than simply another class. My goal is to get to know each student as an individual, understand what works for them and help them become more confident and independent in their learning.

My approach to tutoring is centred on creating an engaging, supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and developing their confidence. I believe students learn best when they are actively involved in the lesson rather than simply listening or taking notes.

Teaching Techniques and Methodology

I use a student-centred approach and adapt my teaching to suit the individual needs, strengths and learning styles of each student. My lessons combine clear teacher explanation with active learning techniques such as questioning, discussion, quizzes, visual resources, exam-style questions and retrieval practice.

I regularly use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) strategies, including breaking information into manageable sections, using visual aids, timelines, key words, sentence starters and structured notes. I also incorporate technology where appropriate to make learning more accessible and engaging.

For students preparing for examinations, I place a strong emphasis on exam technique. This includes working through past questions, identifying command words, planning answers, understanding marking schemes and practising how to structure strong responses. My aim is not simply to help students learn content, but to teach them how to confidently apply their knowledge.

Typical Lesson Length

Lessons would typically last approximately 50–60 minutes. This provides enough time to review previous learning, introduce or revise content, complete activities or exam practice, and finish by checking the student's understanding. Lessons can be adapted depending on the student's age, concentration levels and individual needs.

Qualifications and Experience

I am a qualified post-primary teacher with a Professional Master of Education (PME), which I completed with First Class Honours. My main teaching subject is History, and I also have experience teaching CSPE and Politics & Society.

I have taught students across Junior and Senior Cycle and have considerable experience supporting students individually through 1:1 Learning Support. I have worked with students with a range of additional educational needs and use inclusive teaching strategies to make lessons accessible while maintaining high expectations.

My classroom experience has also given me a strong understanding of the Junior Cycle curriculum, assessment, study skills and examination preparation.

Who My Lessons Are For

My lessons are primarily suitable for post-primary students, particularly those at Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle level.

I can provide support with History, as well as study skills, revision strategies, exam preparation and Junior Cycle exam technique. Lessons can also be particularly beneficial for students who need additional 1:1 support, greater structure, help organising their learning, or increased confidence in approaching schoolwork and examinations.

Ultimately, I aim to make lessons enjoyable, structured and purposeful while helping each student become a more confident and independent learner.
